Kim Valera comes to Benavidez with 11 years of experience in HISD. A native of Indiana, she moved to Houston in 1992 to take a teaching position with the district. She has taught Kindergarten, first and third grades, both regular and bilingual. She was also a Title I coordinator before becoming assistant principal. In 2000, she earned a Master’s degree from the University of St. Thomas in bilingual education, followed shortly by certification to be a principal. She is very excited about being at Benavidez. "Benavidez is a great school with an amazing staff and students who are excited about learning. I look forward to working with the Benavidez family to give our students the best education possible!" she says.
Mrs. Valera is the proud aunt of Zachary and Gabrielle, the children of her brother Kevin and his wife Diana. They live in Indiana, as do her parents, Wayne and Florence. Mrs. Valera lives in Sugar Land with her husband Carlos and their two cats, Travi and Colita. When asked what her favorite things to do are, she responded, "Spending time with my family and reading a good book are the best way I know to spend time!"
Mrs. Valera says, "I hope to be a good leader who brings out the best in everyone who comes through our doors each day. Our teachers and our students deserve the best, and I will do all I can to make sure they get it."
