Bonham Bobcats
from Ms. Alcover’s and Ms. Diegel’s class, and their “cool globe” are the
West Region winners of HISD’s Cool Globes Project! As the regional
winner, our school will receive $1,000.00 and a trip to Discovery Green
downtown on November 12, 2009 to enter their globe in the district finals.
If Bonham wins the district competition, we will receive an additional
$10,000 to fund our campus-wide environmental plan.
Sponsored by
HISD’s Elementary Curriculum Department, Strategic Partnerships, the City
of Houston Mayor’s Office, Reliant Energy, and HEB, the Cool Globes
Project is designed to increase student awareness and interest in and
knowledge of climate change, environmental issues, and global warming.
Our students
worked with Mr. Terrando, Bonham’s Lead Science Teacher, on lessons
dealing with recycling, global warming, and saving our environment.
Students also designed and created their own “cool globe” from paper mache’,
biodegradable peanuts, and other craft items. Students were also required
to keep a journal, write a letter to Houston’s mayor encouraging him to
maintain a “greener” Houston, and draft an Implementation Plan for our
recycling efforts on our campus.
