CIS COMMUNITIES IN SCHOOLS

Communities In Schools (CIS) is a program designed to help children get even more out of their educational experience.  It is a program that works with children and their families to ensure that they are successful in school and able to reach their full potential.

The CIS program at Burrus Elementary strengthens its children and families by linking them to services within the community.  These services are based upon six core components.  Those components are Supportive Guidance, Health and Human Services, Parental and Family Involvement, Pre-Employment/ Employment Enhancement, Enrichment, and Educational Enhancement.
For the student, CIS provides:
*Individual and group supportive guidance
*Self-esteem enhancement activities
*Tutorials
*Enrichment and cultural awareness activities
*Field trip opportunities
*Problem solving and conflict resolution skills training
*Constant reminders that all children are important and special, and have within them the power to achieve their goals if they believe in themselves and work hard to get where they want to be.
  For the family, CIS provides:
*Referrals to family counseling and parental education
*Social service assistance
*Holiday assistance
*Medical, dental and optical service referrals
*Referrals for GED classes and employment skills training
*Home visits and attendance monitoring
*A friendly smile, an ear to listen, or a word of encouragement.
