ANNOUNCEMENTS

WANTED: Science Fair Judges on May 8th

The 3rd-5th grade Science Fair is this Thursday, May 8th, 9:00 AM to noon. We still need a few more judges. We have a whopping 130 projects to judge, and each project needs two different judges. Just give us an hour, two hours, or three if you can spare it. Serving as a judge is a great for parents of younger kids to learn what their kids will be doing in the future. If your child is in 3rd-5th grade, you can judge a grade level other than your child’s grade. To judge, contact Karen Erwin (karenaerwin@comcast.net).

Calling all Library Books!

The last week for checking out books is May 5th to May 9th. All books are due by Friday, May 16th. The library is closed before and after school from May 19th to May 29th.

2008-09 3rd-5th Grade Odyssey of the Mind team forming

Condit Elementary is now forming its 2008-2009 Odyssey of the Mind team. Seven students will be chosen for next year’s 3rd-5th grade (current 2nd-4th grade students) team following a three-part try-out to be held at Condit on Tuesday, May 13, from 3:00 – 4:15pm. The team members will be announced Thursday, May 22nd. Questions? Contact Helen Swiff-Goodman (SWIFFGO@hotmail.com).

Odyssey  of the Mind needs you!!

This year Condit’s Odyssey of the Mind teams have had great success.  Unfortunately, only one coach is returning for next year for 3rd-5th grade: Helen Swiff-Goodman.  This year three teams competed at the regional competition and the two eligible teams both advanced to state.  This means that for the 2008-2009 school year Condit has 14 experienced team members, but only 7 of them can be on the team.  Please consider coaching a team. There is plenty of training and support available. It would be a shame if these talented students have to give up Odyssey due to a lack of parental support. Please contact Helen Swiff-Goodman at SWIFFGO@hotmail.com if you are interested in coaching a team.

Water Coolers, Wagons, and Volunteers Needed Field Day (May 23rd)

Condit’s annual Field Day is coming soon! On order to keep our kids well hydrated, we need to borrow several large water cooler jugs and wagons for our water stations. We have 4 water stations, plus we try to have water jugs as close to all of the events as possible. We want our kids to be as comfortable and safe as possible so if you can lend us a cooler or wagon (or both), please let Heather Moos (cmoos@sbcglobal.net) know. Plan to bring your water cooler and/or wagon to school on Thursday the 22nd.

Thank you to all volunteers who have already offered their time for Field Day. We can still use more help, and volunteering is one of the best ways to watch all of the action. All volunteers MUST be cleared through VIPS, so turn in your paperwork soon if you are not yet cleared. To volunteer, fill out the Field Day volunteer form that came home in the Wednesday folder, or look for additional forms outside the school office. Remember that visitors who are not volunteering can attend Field Day after 12:00 PM.

Don’t Forget to Order School Supplies for Next Year

Remember, you must order your child’s school supplies NOW for next year. We will not be selling school supplies at Snow Cone Social. Only preordered supplies can be picked up at Snow Cone Social. To order using cash or check, use the order form outside the office and turn it in no later than May 9th. Online (credit card) ordering is available until June 14th (www.epipacks.com, school ID CON007). Questions? Contact Pegi Newhouse (newhousehome@sbcglobal.net).

All-Call for Condit Bookroom Volunteers

Condit needs to place the entire textbook inventory on a database (TipWeb) by the beginning of next year. Once the textbooks are inventoried in the database, they can be tracked (so if a book is left at a store, playground, etc. it can be taken to any HISD school and be identified and returned to its proper place). Teachers will also be able to keep better track of the textbooks by using the database.

Each textbook needs a bar code sticker before they are uploaded into the database. This is large task to be completed over the summer, and Ms.  Escamilla is looking for Bookroom volunteers who could come by a couple times of week for an hour or so and help place the bar code stickers on the textbooks.

If you are interested in assisting with this project, email Ms. Escamilla at aescamil@houstonisd.org so she can arrange convenient times and dates with you.

Retirement Gift for Ms. Donalson

This year we say goodbye to retiring teacher Ms. Donalson. To recognize her many years of service, the PTO is thanking Ms. Donalson with a gift card. If you would like to contribute, please drop a donation in the box in the office by FRIDAY, MAY 16th.

Turn in PTO Expense Forms Now

If you have authorization to spend PTO funds, please turn in any expense forms/receipts that you have to Nancy Loncarich as soon as possible. Ideally, we’d like to have forms/receipts turned in by June 1st so Nancy doesn’t have to work so hard over the summer.
