2005-2006 Seven HISD schools named to statewide "Honor Roll"

October 31, 2005 - Just for the Kids (JFTK) and the Texas Business and Education Coalition (TBEC) ranked seven HISD schools among the 130 in Texas that they will honor on December 6 at a reception and dinner at the Hyatt Regency Town Lake. The campuses were named Honor Roll schools, and they represent the most consistent performers in educating all student groups over a three-year period of time and rank highest in their individual peer groups, which are the schools across the state that most closely approximate their size and student population makeup.

Eighty-five elementary schools, 33 middle schools and 12 high schools will send delegates to a “Share the Success” seminar and awards presentation. The TBEC/JFTK Honor Roll is underwritten by Washington Mutual, H-E-B and IBM.

“It is important to the business community of Texas to celebrate these Honor Roll Schools,” said John Stevens, Executive Director of TBEC. “We are counting on the students of these schools to one day run our state, so it is vital that they be well educated and prepared for the 21st century workplace.”

The HISD schools making the list are Bush, Cage, Cornelius, and Lyons Elementary Schools; Energized for Excellence and Project Chrysalis Middle Schools; and the DeBakey High School for Health Professions.

“The only way to effectively measure where improvement is occurring or where it needs to take place,” said Mike Hudson of Just for the Kids, “is to analyze academic results. And the academic results of these Honor Roll schools are outstanding.”

Just for the Kids is a non-profit data analysis and research organization founded in 1995 by Texas business leader Tom Luce. The organization’s purpose is to raise academic standards and increase student academic achievement in Texas. JFTK publishes information on how schools perform over time and lists high-performing schools in the state on its Web site at www.Just4Kids.org.

Texas Business and Education Coalition, formed in 1989, is a non-profit organization of business executives and education leaders dedicated to improving the performance of the public school system by influencing state education policy and stimulating community-based school improvement initiatives. TBEC volunteer teams visit all Honor Roll schools to confirm the performance data and evaluate the schools. In addition to information about the schools, TBEC makes a wide variety of information about public education available on its Web site, www.TBEC.org.

2004-2005 Seven HISD schools make statewide "Honor Roll"

November 16, 2004—Seven HISD schools were recognized recently by the Texas Business and Education Coalition and Just for the Kids, two of Texas’ leading education reform organizations. The schools were included in a list of the best-performing public schools in Texas, as compiled by the two organizations.

Included on the statewide "Honor Roll" were Cage, Cornelius, Lockhart, Lyons, Mading, and Wesley elementary schools and DeBakey High School for Health Professions.

"Honor Roll" schools such as these distinguished HISD campuses have achieved excellence year in and year out, displaying the determination that fosters their students’ growth and success, including consistently educating all of their student sub-groups to perform at the highest academic levels. Schools do not apply for this award and are recognized only after they have maintained their high academic performance over a period of time.

The schools will be recognized at the 2004 TBEC/JFTK Honor Roll Program in Austin on December 9, at the Hyatt Hotel.
