                                                      Mission Statement

Cornelius Elementary is a dynamic, outstanding school.  Our goal is to provide a quality education to the future leaders of our country and world.  We wish to instill a successful, hard working attitude in our students and desire to assist our children in becoming productive citizens.  We envision a bright future for each and every child we teach and help make that dream a reality daily through our constant hard work in the classroom and beyond.  We hold high expectations for our pupils and believe that if better is possible, then good is not enough.

Homework

Homework is assigned to enhance what is being taught in the classroom.  Its purpose is to provide additional practice and emphasize important concepts that the pupils are learning.  Homework is necessary for student progress and the development of good study skills.  If homework is not assigned on a particular evening, it is a wise idea to have your child read a something, write a story, compute math problems or study math facts, practice handwriting, or study spelling.

Visits

Parents are always welcome at Cornelius.  We ask that parents sign in at the front office and obtain a visitor's pass which is to be worn during their stay.  Parents must make arrangements with their child's teacher if they desire to sit in on a lesson.  We do ask that parents do not disturb lessons or interrupt instruction.  Each teacher has a designated conference time during which a parent can schedule a meeting.  This can be done either calling the teacher at school or sending a written request.

Communication

Teachers appreciate an open line of communication with parents.  Most teachers are willing to schedule meetings before and after school and are always available during their scheduled conference time.  Sending a note with your child or calling the school and leaving a message are the best ways to secure a meeting with a teacher.

School Hours

School Hours for students are 7:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.
Morning PreK hours are 7:45 a.m. to 10:45 a.m.
Afternoon PreK hours are 11:45 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.

Breakfast begins at 7:00 a.m.  Students are to report to breakfast, the playground, or the cafeteria (if inclement weather) immediately upon their arrival at school.  Children are not allowed in the classrooms before the teacher aides release them from these areas, as many teachers are not in their classrooms, but on duty supervising students.  We ask that students are in their rooms by 7:45 a.m. ready to start the day.

Dress Code

The dress code for boys is as follows:

  • Khaki or navy blue walking shorts
  • Khaki or navy blue pants
  • Red, white, or navy blue polo shirt

The dress code for girls is as follows:

  • Black and red plaid skirt
  • Khaki or navy blue skirt
  • Khaki or navy blue pants
  • Khaki or navy blue walking shorts
  • Khaki or navy blue jumper
  • Black and red plaid jumper
  • Red, white, or navy blue polo shirt

Accidents or Illnesses

We are extremely concerned about the safety and well being of everyone at Cornelius and do our best to keep our school a safe and carefree place.  However, accidents do happen and children do get sick while on campus.  In the event of an accident or injury, the student is first sent to the nurse, so she may assess the situation.  If she deems it necessary, she will contact a parent, so the child can be picked up and brought home or to the doctor.  If the nurse is unable to reach a parent, she will then call the emergency number written on the child's enrollment card which is filled out at the beginning of the school year.

If a child is on any type of medication, the parent needs to send the medicine with written instructions, so the nurse can administer it to the child.

Parking

The parking lot is reserved for the Cornelius faculty and staff.  There is parking available in the front of the school for visitors.  The City of Houston has designated the area in the front of the school as a parallel parking zone.

Attendance

Students are required to attend school daily.  The only absences that are excused are death in the family, personal illness, and inclement weather (which would result in the closing of schools).  Parents are required to send the teacher a letter or doctor's excuse upon a student's return from an absence.  Frequent absences may result in an attendance referral which would constitute a visit to the home by an attendance officer.  The official attendance count is taken at 9:00 a.m.

Inclement Weather

In case of bad weather, parents should tune into the radio or television for information about school closings.  The Superintendent of Schools will decide whether or not to close the schools, then make an official announcement.  Anyone who misses the media announcement may call (713) 267-1704 for details.
