Exploring Texas
JoAnna Harrison - Magnet Coordinator

Cornelius Science Academy is a magnet school in the Houston Independent School District. Cornelius is located in the Southeast part of Houston, Texas  on a heavily wooded six acre plot.  The Science Academy is supported by a Magnet Coordinator,  five  science teachers, science labs, a weather station, and a Nature Center. All of these resources serves our school population. The school has been recognized as Exemplary by the Texas Education Agency for many years. This year ,fifth graders who participate in the garden club and the Magnet coordinator (sponsor) are responsible for creating this web page.

Project Description
The members of our garden club have been involved in several environmental projects during the school year. Vegetables and flowers were planted, and cylinder gardening was investigated. We started a recycling program by constructing and maintaining two kinds of composts, leaves and worms. We fed birds, improved the beauty of the garden, and provided a place for Homer, our resident squirrel to find food. The members of the garden club were also caretakers for many other activities that took place in the Nature Center. This year we are proud to announce that we researched and  initiated a special project which focused on various types of roses that grow in Texas. Let's visit our web site and find out more about our accomplishments.
