Bilingual  Program

Cornelius Elementary is proud to offer a Developmental Bilingual Program to its Limited English Proficiency (LEP) students.  This type of bilingual program allows Spanish language students to continue developing their skills in their native language as they learn English.  The goal of the program is to create truly bilingual adults, fully fluent in two languages.  Other students whose home language is not English are instructed in our English as a second language (ESL) classrooms.  In this setting, students are given additional support as they learn English.  Parents are always included in the decision of which type of program best suits their child's needs.

Josefa Olivares says: “Bilingual Education is a great opportunity for the children.  This program eliminates the “sink” or “swim” theory.  Students are taught in their native language, and therefore, they are not struggling and directed to failure.  It also helps students make a smooth transition into a regular classroom in the future”.

Elizabeth Jones says: "The Bilingual Program is necessary and important for the students culture background.  By the time students get to fifth grade, if they started in first grade, they should be fluent in the English language.  This is why the program is beneficial to have".
