Technology

Cornelius Math and Science Academy recognizes the need for the students to be computer literate in today's world. 

Each classroom, grades third through fifth, has at least two Compaq computers in the classroom. Most of them have up to four.  All of those computers are connected to the HISD Network and to the World Wide Web. 

The teachers are constantly implementing computer use into the curriculum, so the students spend a great deal of time on the computers.  Besides using the Internet, there are a wide variety of programs that are available to the students.   

However, the most important investment that Cornelius has been made in the last two years are related to a very specialized learning software (programs), that allow students mastery the content areas.   Currently our campus is holding the software Heart Beeps, Compass Learning, Accelerated Reader, Kamico Data Connection, Orchard,  Making the Grade among others.

Also the teachers are able to use some exciting hardware in their classrooms.  We have scanners and digital cameras that can be used to enhance a book report, science fair project, and our website.  Teachers can connect their computers to televisions to demonstrate software, introduce a lesson using the Internet, or show a PowerPoint presentation.  We have the ability to conduct teleconferences with remote locations. 

All  teachers at Cornelius have laptop computers to use for the year.  Most teachers keep their grade book on the computer.  Some of them have databases with student information.   Creating PowerPoint presentations to introduce lessons is another popular use for the laptops.   

Many of our teachers are beginning to take advantage of HISD's computer- based training.  The teachers are able to access classes right out of their own homes by logging on to the website and downloading the software.

Even more teachers are attending classes to learn additional skills or brush up on some old ones.  We are especially encouraging teachers to take advantage of the foundations courses that HISD's technology department offers. These classes would help them to learn more about the computers they have and how to use them to make their teaching better and save time with bookkeeping and communications.  HISD's Technology Center truly is top notch!

We have received a year long license for SchoolKit Rex.  It is a wonderful program that gives step by step instructions to students using the Office programs.  Students learn technology while learning other important skills in all subject areas!  It's a super on-line program!

Here at Cornelius we are very proud of our efforts to integrate technology into our teaching.  We do our best to stay on the cutting edge.  We recognize that technology is constantly changing, and that no one person knows everything there is to know concerning it, but working together as a team we are able to stay up to date in this dynamic area.
