Children’s Art Gallery                                        Feb 6, 2008

A five–year grant from Harris County Department of Education for the After School Enrichment program, an elementary school teacher gifted with a passion for promoting visual art, a principal who is an enthusiastic advocate of Fine Arts Programs, talented student artists and spontaneous support from the community, have all contributed towards the enormous success of Crockett’s Visual Arts program ever since its inception in 2003. Their contributions have culminated in the making and opening of the Children’s Art Gallery at Crockett, which was formally opened on January 31, 2008

The opening event was graced by the presence of many dignitaries and preceded by some scintillating entertainment items by students. HISD Board Member & Trustee for Crockett Elementary Diana Davila was the Guest of Honor.  Welcoming the gathering, Principal Mrs. Troutman recalled the outstanding support received from the community by way of grants, fundraisers and donations. Additionally, Crockett students have created beautiful works of Art and won several prestigious competitions.

Significant among these are:

The Bells by Marina Heckert – Winner HISD Holiday Art Contest 2005

The Colors by Alejandra Garcia – First Place National Art Contest for After School Students 2006

The Snow Globe by Noe Resendiz – Winner HISD Holiday Art Contest 2007

The Mission by Marina Heckert – Gold Medal Houston Rodeo Art 2008

Beautiful tokens of appreciation were given to Board Members Diana Davila and Diane Johnson for their support and to Art teacher Geetha Thomas for her dedication. Entertainment items included performances by Crockett’s renowned Marimba & Orchestra, classical dance, piano recital and readings by a few students on ‘Why I want to go to College.’ The Ribbon Cutting was jointly done by Board Members Diana Davila, Diane Johnson, HISD Central region superintendent Adriana Tamez, Executive Principal Sandra Benavides, Principal Elida Troutman & Art Teacher Geetha Thomas. All the visitors then toured the Art gallery and were impressed by the works on display.
