Ms. Grace Oyekan a special education teacher at Cunningham is traveling to Japan as a recipient of The Japan Fulbright
Memorial Fund Teacher Program. The program is fully funded by the Government
of Japan and administered by the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund office of the
Japan-United States Educational Commission (JUSEC). She will spent three
weeks in Japan visiting urban schools, museums, and historic landmarks. Ms.
Oyekan will become a part of a smaller group of teachers that will be
assigned to visit a particular Japanese city. They will also visit local
schools and teachers' colleges, where they interact with Japanese teachers,
students, and parents. Ms. Oyekan is also excited about her visit and
homestay with a Japanese family.
Grace was a member
of the
corporate world and did a career change to education 7 years ago as an
Intern of the Houston ISD Alternative Certification Program here at
Cunningham. She earned certifications in Special Education, English as
Second Language (ESL), Gifted and Talented (GT), and a Master of
Science degree in Curriculum & Instruction/Special Education.
Her awards include
Southwest
District Special Education Teacher of the Year 2005, ATPE Elementary Teacher
of the Year 2005, ACP Intern of the Year Nominee 2002, Cunningham Rookie
Teacher of the Year 2002, Cunningham Special Education Teacher of the Year
(2 years), and won grants to the Rice University Summer Mathematics Program
2007, Urban Harvest Gardening, and now the 2008 Japan Fulbright Memorial
Fund (JMF) for Teachers.
Cunningham staff and students will
anxiously await the return of Ms. Oyekan to hear all about her visit with
students, teachers and families in Japan.
