Even Start Family Literacy Grant Program

The purpose of this program is to increase a child's potential for later school success by providing parents with child-development information, teaching parents interactive activities to do with their child, providing parents with comprehensive family-literacy services, providing access to other social services, and coordinating services that are culturally appropriate and family-focused. Program emphases are on prenatal, infant' and early-childhood stages; GED; English as a Second Language instruction; and family literacy. Collaborating partners, who will provide a broad range of in-kind services as part of the cost share, are AVANCE, Children’s Museum of Houston, Depelchin Children’s Center, and Houston Community College System.

The primary objective of the program's adult-education component is to help parents improve their living conditions and to prepare those who are interested in joining the workforce. This program is committed to working closely with community organizations. For more information contact the program coordinator Ms. Ortiz at (713) 295-5223.
