The Spark Park at Cunningham was planned with input from parents, teachers, Spark Park representatives, and students. A theme of "Travel Over Time And Water" was selected, and an architect went to work on a design.

Overlooking the four major play areas and shell amphitheater is a wall-sized mural of aquatic life. This mural greets the visitor who is traveling the walkway, which is also a timeline, and which winds its way around all of the park's play areas. Children researched major events in the world's history, designed and painted tiles representing each event, and completed the art work. These tiles then were made into benches which run along the walkway. The spacing of the benches is representative of the space of time. Imagine how close together the American historical events are compared to the dinosaur and first man era.

The shell amphitheater is used for class presentations and major park events. Plus it's scalloped design and tiered steps make a fun place to sit and talk with friends.

Central in the park is a large compass rose with a school of fish used as the weather vane. The compass rose, a mosaic of mirrors and tiles, is surrounded by a colored cement base with children's drawings, hand and foot prints.

The design of the park allows for the making or separation of age groups, but all of the park's "play islands" are individual scenes connected by a single piece of equipment or the walkway. The design gives the visitor a sense of whole and theme.

The four play areas include a beached ship, a climbing area, slide and sandbox for young children; a climbing area, slide, and "eel" see-saw for older children; and an obstacle course. The beached ship has a sail, communication lines, and steering column.
Beside the play area is a track approximately one-fifth of a mile in length and is used for jogging. This track surrounds a soccer and baseball field.

Benches for resting and watching are found throughout, along with plenty of sun and shade - all make for a great park!

The Colt faculty, staff, parents, and students would like to give a special thanks to our retired business partner Bechtel for their monetary contribution in the construction of our park.
