How to Help Your Child to Read – Every Day

Before reading,
- read the title of the book or story to your child and ask, “What does the title make you think the story will be about?”
- ask your child to talk about what he or she thinks might be happening in the story based on the cover of the book or pictures
During reading,
- ask your child questions that require more than a yes/no answer
After reading,
- encourage your child to retell the story in his or her own words using the correct order of events.
- ask questions to help your child relate to the story in a personal way
- Extend the reading experience and have your child make up a new ending for the story or do an activity related to the story
