- Make sure your child sees you reading. You are your child’s first and most influential teacher.

- Choose a special time and place to read aloud to your child.

- Listen to your child read to you for 15-20 minutes every day.

- Make sure your child understands what is being read.

 

How to Help Your Child to Read – Every Day

                                         
Before reading,

• read the title of the book or story to your child and ask, “What does the title make you think the story will be about?”
• ask your child to talk about what he or she thinks might be happening in the story based on the cover of the book or pictures

During reading,

• ask your child questions that require more than a yes/no answer

After reading,

• encourage your child to retell the story in his or her own words using the correct order of events.

• ask questions to help your child relate to the story in a personal way

• Extend the reading experience and have your child make up a new ending for the story or do an activity related to the story
