Meeting Student Needs
Staff and families are proud of the nurturing, learning
environment that is so important to student success. The staff at Foster
Elementary School is committed to helping all children become
responsible for their learning and behavior. A Life skills program,
presented by the Guidance Counselor and classroom teachers, helps
students with the skills they need to be successful in school, in life
and in maintaining a calm and caring school.
The multi-age combination allows older students to learn
about leadership and to serve as role models and tutors for the younger
students. The younger students find adjustments come quicker because
older students know procedures and are able to mentor. Instruction is
provided to meet all needs.
Because children learn at different paces and in
different ways, support is provided to help students master a
challenging curriculum. The federally funded Title I program
provide opportunities for individual and small group instruction in
Reading and Reading Readiness. The focus of these programs is in the
primary grades. Additionally, first grade readers can receive extra help
through Book Buddies, an award winning tutorial program sponsored by the
School.
Foster offers many opportunities to meet children's need
for extra challenges. An enrichment specialist works with all students
in grades K-2 for talent development. Special classes are also held to
serve students identified as Gifted or High Ability. A Gifted Specialist
works with all the students at Foster with an added emphasis in grades
2-4. The Gifted and Enrichment Specialists, as well as the classroom
teachers, plan classroom instruction that challenges students to use
higher order thinking skills.
Parental Involvement
Parental involvement is critical to the success of
Foster school. Student events are the focus of most parent nights and
parent volunteers are a mainstay of the instructional program. The
Foster PTO is an active and supportive component of Foster school.
We welcome parents to participate at Foster in many
ways. Some ways parents stay involved are by volunteering in classrooms
and on field trips, being a Book Buddy, attending classroom social
events and get-togethers, tutoring students, helping with fund-raising,
serving as a PTO officer or chairperson, and/or working on school
projects. |
