Success For All

Success For All

Success For All is a school-wide restructuring program for students in grades pre-K to
six. The idea behind this program is to organize resources to ensure that virtually every
student will succeed in reading throughout the elementary grades, that no student will be
allowed to "fall between the cracks."

The Components

Reading, Reading Roots, Early Learning, and Wings. During reading periods, students are
regrouped across age lines for 90 minutes so that each reading class contains students
reading at one level. This eliminates the need to have reading groups within the class and
increases the amount of time for direct instruction. Writing is emphasized throughout the
grades. Writing instruction uses a writer's workshop format in which students plan, draft,
revise, edit, and publish compositions with feedback at each stage from teachers and
peers.

Other Features

Cooperative learning, one-on-one tutors, and eight-week assessments are fundamental to
the program. During cooperative learning students work together in partnerships and
teams. Tutoring is given to those students who are failing to keep up with their
classmates in reading. Information from the eight-week assessment is used, among other
things, to assign students to tutoring and to suggest alternative teaching strategies in the
regular classroom.

The Facilitator

The full-time facilitator, Mrs. Delois Walker (photo top left), works in each classroom
with teachers to help them implement the reading program. In addition, the facilitator
coordinates the eight-week assessments.
