LOCATION
Garden Oaks is nestled under the large old oaks of the Garden Oaks neighborhood located just outside the North 610 Loop between Ella and Shepherd. Click here for a map.

DEMOGRAPHICS:
Garden Oaks is uniquely diversified community composed of people with different socio- economic and educational backgrounds. The school population is 8.2% African-American, 69.4% Hispanic, 20.6% White, and 1.6% Asian. Of this total population, 17.4% or 108 students are in the Montessori program. The student body of 550 children is distributed among 30 teachers.

SPECIAL PROGRAMS:
Students may participate in one or more of the following special programs.

2.  Neighborhood Gifted and Talented
3.  Bilingual/ESL Education
4.  PPCD
5.  Exceptional Education

REGISTRATION:
It is necessary to have the following items in order to register for school:
1. Proof of residence - (light bill)
2. Certified Copy of birth certificate or card
3. Immunization record
4. Parent/Guardian picture identification
5. Report card or transcript from last school
6. Withdrawal sheet from previous school establishing clear record if enrolled during school year
7. Guardianship papers if the student is residing with someone other than the parent

SCHOOL DRESS CODE:
ALL Garden Oaks students are required to wear uniforms each day.  School uniforms are:
         * Khaki pants, walking shorts, skirts, skorts, or jumpers.
         * Red, Navy Blue, or White polo style shirts or Garden Oaks Elementary T-shirts.
         * Soft soled fully enclosed shoes (tennis shoe style).  No open toed or open heeled shoes are allowed. 
           Sandals are not permissible footwear.
ALL students must wear uniforms daily.  There will be no exceptions.

First day of school	August 27, 2007
Last Day of school	May 29, 2008
School Hours	Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.
Bell Schedule	7:45 a.m. Students may go to their class 8:00 a.m. (tardy bell) All students arriving afterwards must go to the office for an admission slip.
Breakfast	7:15 - 7:40 a.m. Free for all children
Lunch	HISD Food Services Menu 10:40 - 12:20 (scheduled by class) cost: $1.40 (child)
Attendance	Taken every day at 9:30 a.m.. Students not present at 9:30 a.m. are counted absent.  Refer to the handbook for additional guidelines.
