Congratulations to our Chess Club!
Here are the results of the Spring 2008 Horn Chess Club. Tyler Owens took the First Place trophy over Jonathan Mills, who placed 2nd. Edward Bittner was third and Caleb Yen placed fourth. Trophies were awarded thru 4th place. The Best Beginner trophy was taken by Geoff Kryzkowsky. Awards for Most Improved, Best Sportsmanship, and Most Potential went to Nathan Rice, Anna McLaughlin and Caleb Yen, respectively.
Opportunities for summer classes were distributed to the parents of students who have shown interest and proper conduct. Regular chess classes will resume in the fall.
On May 4, the 8th Annual SJ Chess School Invitational Tournament was held at Borders - Meyerland. Reuben Tang tied for 4th place with 2.5 points out of 5. Tyler Owens scored 2 points and Steven Jenkins tallied 1.5 points. Sixteen players from Horn, Condit, Malev, Kolter, Mark Twain and Herod elementary schools participated in the invitational tourney run by Steve Jacobs.
Name That Book Winners!
Congratulations to the Horn K-2 "Name that Book" team for winning 1st place in the district final round of the annual HISD reading competition. The team did a wonderful job representing our school in a very tough competition. This year's team members are Scott Williams-Team Captain, Jared Jong, Adam Haut, Jacob Bowen, Jared Clark, Isabella Hsu, and Justin Owens.
Ms. Fish Lights the Way!
Cindy Fish, second grade teacher, won an honorable mention in the Lands’ End Teachers Light the Way Awards contest. This was a national contest for nominations for teachers who “light the way” for their students and school. She was one of 45 winners out of almost 5000 entries. Congratulations to Ms. Fish!
Teacher of the Year – Ms. Ueckert
Liz Ueckert, second grade teacher, was voted Teacher of the Year for Horn. She was honored at the West Region Teacher of the Year luncheon this past week. Congratulations to Ms. Ueckert!

Congratulations to the Horn Academy 3rd - 5th grade “Name that Book” team for representing the school so well in the H.I.S.D. Library Services annual reading competition on April 23rd . In an extremely close competition which came down to a tie-breaker, the Horn team came in second place in the preliminary round. Team members are Sophia Huang-Team Captain, Tanvi Varadhachary, Corrin McCullough, Ruben Tang, Ricky Feig, Abby Evans, and Christina Ru.

Congratulations to our UIL Winners!
Congratulations to our UIL winners in Public Speaking and Oral Interpretation. Three of our six students made it to the Finals round – Maci Dismuke, Marlei Dismuke and Garrett Sucher! Maci made it to the top three in Public Speaking and won 2nd place in the Overall division.
The HISD UIL Competition was held at Scarborough High School on March 12, 2008. All Horn students received trophies. And thanks to our sponsor/coach – Ms. Evelyn Gates!

Congratulations to Horn Elementary 5th grader David Falloure, Jr. on his awesome speech at HISD’s State of the Schools Luncheon. The theme of Dr. Saavedra’s message was “Aspire, Act, Attain.” David was one of four students selected from the entire school district to present a student’s point of view on their achieving goals and aspirations. David successfully represented Horn Elementary and delivered a beautiful speech to 2000 of Houston’s community leaders and educators, including Mayor Bill White.

Name That Book, 3rd-5th Team
The Name That Book 3rd-5th Team placed first in the preliminaries on Thursday, May 3. They competed in the finals on Monday, May 7. The team placed 7 th out of all the elementary schools in HISD. Way to go!

Odyssey of the Mind team placed 2nd at the Regional Competition on March 3. They will advance to the State level for competition on March 31.

Another successful Family Science Night was held on the 18th. Families had a great time exploring the world of birds. Thanks to Acme Party & Tent for underwriting the Nature Discovery room and Access Sciences for printing the brochures. Our PTO paid for the other expenses including having live birds come from the Audubon Society.

Ms. Talley's 3rd grade class had a special visitor. Rachael wrote an essay about "Why I Dairy Products and Why I Like the Texans." She was one of ten winning essays in the Houston area. See photos of the event.

Ms. Shapiro's 3rd grade class received an American flag that was flown over the Al Faw Palace in Baghdad, Iraq. The flag was given to the school from the coalition force in Iraq that the class had sent Valentines and gifts to. Cub Scout Pack 130 presented a flag ceremony May 19, 2006. The whole school turned out to witness the flag raising. Thank you to Niki Noblett, 5th grade, for leading us in singing The Star Spangled Banner. Seven Horn students competed in the Cultural Heritage Speech Contest. All seven made it to the finals on Friday night. The judges from both the Scarborough National Forensic Program and the University of Houston Forensic Society shared the fun and tremendous learning experience this contest produced for the 40 student participants! Nine Horn Academy graduates will head to Laguna Hills , California , to play in a College Soccer Showcase over the Memorial Day Weekend. Tori Fish, Murray Gray, Jana Hemann, Lisa Wojnar, Maegan Hinze, Ellen Ankney, Partricia Brackendorff, Chloe Tucker, and Kellie Rodekohr are members of the Bellaire Heat U16 Girls soccer team. The Heat, coached by Debbie Tucker, started as a neighborhood team when the girls were second graders at Horn. Since that time, the “Heat” has won the Eastern District Championship, the 2003 South Texas Super Two State Championship, and currently play Division I. After leaving Horn the “Heat” girls attended Pershing Middle School and won the HISD City Soccer Championship in 2004. Most recently 6 of the Horn/Heat girls played on the Bellaire High School Girls Varsity Soccer team finishing out the season undefeated and winning the 21-5A District Championship. Along with their sports talent, all the Heat/horn players are members of the National Honor Society. The Heat’s assistant coaches are Daived Tucker and Jim Fish, husband of Horn’s second grade teachers, Cindy Fish.
First grade teachers have brought the ocean's life to the classroom. Marine life from the Atlantic Ocean tidal pools has been shipped here for the students to get close up look at them and to be able to touch the animals and plants. Ms. Varga and Ms. McMahan's first graders will follow up with a visit to the Houston Museum of Natural Science's Malacology Hall to do a scavenger hunt for the different types of mollusks found in the hall.
The City of Bellaire proclaimed Horn's Odyssey of the Mind representatives of our school and city. We are extremely proud of the OM team because all the other teams from the West Region that are going to World are from Vanguard schools.

Horn’s Odyssey of the Mind team took 3rd place in the State competition on Saturday, April 1 st. Besides getting 3rd place, they also received the Ranatra Fusca Award for Outstanding Creativity. This makes them eligible for competing in the World competition in late May. Team members are Yoseph Dance, Zach Feig, Hailey Haut, Alex Rice, Maggie Talley, and Dito Utomo. Mrs. Trina Feig is their parent coach and Mrs. Margaret Slutz, teacher, is spontaneous judge for the team.
Name That Book Team Places 3rd in Division
On April 11, 2006 , Horn Elementary participated in the HISD K-2 nd grade “Name that Book” competition. The Library Services department of HISD puts on this annual reading contest and allows one team of six members per school to compete against other HISD elementary schools. The Horn team did an excellent job representing the school, coming in third in their division. Congratulations to five fifth graders who went to the first HISD's Black History Oral Speech and Interpretation Contest Thursday, March 23rd at Scarborough High School They include Megan Hollister, Holly Reichert, Emily Koch, Madison Gates and Chelsea Facison. The participants recited poetry or an excerpt from a book. Holly Reichert, Emily Koch, and Madison Gates won in their division and went to the finals at the University of Houston on Friday night. Emily Koch won 3 rd place for her oral recitation of an excerpt from Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry. Holly Reichert was a finalist for her speech that she wrote on what Martin Luther King, Jr.’s speech meant to her. Madison Gates was a finalist for her poetry recitation. The Pine Street Wax Museum of American History was presented by third graders. Students read a book about a person in history, dressed a the character, and then wrote a short speech to say as visitors came by. Ms. Connie Dotan, teacher sponsor
Grace Phillips, our physical education teacher, is one of only two teachers chosen to represent the Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance at a special program in Monterrey, Mexico .Phillips taught a physical education lesson to a group of students. This demonstration was done in conjunction with the Nuevo Leon's teacher of the year selection process that annually highlights the physical education program. The Texas Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance (TAHPERD) received a personal invitation from the director of sport and physical education for Nuevo Leon, Mexico to provide two physical education teachers to give a demonstration of quality physical education lessons to teachers attending the Nuevo Leon's physical education teacher of the year competition. Phillips was chosen from more than 100 teachers who applied for the honor of representing Texas physical education teachers. Officers of TAHPERD reviewed qualifications and experience of those applying and selected Phillips of Houston ISD and Janice Longino of Rockwall ISD.

Students sent valentines to soldiers stationed in Iraq. Ms. Shapiro's class got emails and pictures back from the soldiers that received their valenetines. The class collected items to send to the soldiers and mailed four boxes to the soldiers.

Horn invited families to explore science at Family Science Night. Door prizes from the Houston Museum of Natural Science were donated by Ms. Betty Glass and Ms. Becky Clark, Sam and Matt’s mom. Dr. Billy Cohn, Robert’s dad, explained things for the “Blood and Guts” room. Parents and children learned much from Dr. Cohn. A volunteer from the George Observatory was present to help out even though the clouds had rolled in to hide the night sky.
