School Highlights

 Our goals help us to focus our efforts and clearly define what we are going to do.

JR Harris has developed and improved. Students, parents and teachers make this school a great institution to place our community children.

Demographics

  • John R. Harris Elementary School, located in the shadow of the Houston Ship Channel in Southeast Houston, has an enrollment of 711 students. 

  • The student population is 95% Hispanic.  African-American students comprise 3% of the population and 2% of the students are White/Other. 

  • Significant numbers of the students are bilingual with 485 students qualifying as Limited English Proficient (LEP).  

  • One hundred four students are G. T.

Achievements 2007-2008

 In 2007, 78% of the students met standard in Writing which ranked us Recognized in this portion of the TAKS Results.

 82% students passed in 2007-08 TAKS Science Test

  

 

 

 

 

 

In 2007-2008 students improved 11% from 78% to 89% of all students taking the TAKS Writing Test and almost meeting Exemplary standard.

 

 

 

 

 

 

  

In 2007, 73% of the students met standard in Math and that rose by 18% from 73% to 91% after the implementation of the Sharon Wells Math Program in 2008.

  

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

In 2008-2009 the expected outcome will be for 95% of all students to meet or exceed the state standard in Math.

Scores improve in Science from 76% in 2007 to 81% in 2008.

 

 

 

 

 

 

 The expectation for the 2008-2009 year will be that 90% of all students meet or exceed the state standard for TAKS Science.

Scores improved in Reading from 79% in 2007 to 88% in 2008.

Our Faculty…

 

1.        Instruction by highly qualified teachers 100% of our teachers are certified for the position they hold. 

2.        High-quality and on-going professional development – Lead Teachers who receive training during the summer and during the school year, provide on-site training and monitoring to assist in professional development.

3.        The result has been that 100% of our classroom teachers are appropriately certified for the position they hold.
