Serve Houston

Goals and Objectives

The primary goal of Club Learn and Serve is to provide free daily after-school care for low-income inner city children in order to promote school achievement, develop personal skills and prevent delinquency.

Objectives:

1. Provide students with the basic components of the program every day: academic support, enrichment activities and personal skills development.

2. Implement SERVE HOUSTON’s service learning curriculum to teach students about various social problems and involve each student in hands-on service projects to address these issues.

3. Offer students extracurricular activities such as scouting, sports, arts education and field trips.

4. Bring resources from community volunteers and organizations such as the YMCA, the Scouts, the Children’s Museum of Houston, Junior Achievement, Houston Achievement Place and others into the schools.

Activities and Services

The major components of Club Learn and Serve are:

* Academic Support (homework assistance, reading programs and preparation for standardized testing)

* Enrichment Activities (recreation, arts activities, etc.)

* Personal Skills Development (service learning, scouting activities, team building, etc.)

* Community Involvement (partnerships with community-based organizations, use of volunteers) Description of Collaborative Partners

Club Learn and Serve is a true collaborative effort. The YMCA provides corpsmember training, activity centers and funding for snacks for the after-school site while SERVE HOUSTON AmeriCorps members provide the vital human resources needed to operate the program. (Funding for AmeriCorps members comes from federal, state and local sources of private support, including corporations and foundations.) Training provided by the Scouts, the Children’s Museum and other youth-serving organizations prepares corpsmembers to bring new educational programming into the school. Kennedy Elementary School will provide the facilities for the program, an After-School Program Teacher Liaison and funds to match the costs of the AmeriCorps members, with funds provided through this grant.
