Mrs. Adele B. Looscan |
When the school opened in 1936, it was called Irvington Elementary School. A few years after its opening, the school's name was changed to Adele B. Looscan Elementary School, after the person of the same name.
Mrs. Adele Briscoe Looscan (1848-1935) was born in Harrisburg, Harris County, Texas. Her father was very prominent in the Texas Revolution and in the movements of the citizens which led up to it. Her grandfather was one of "The Old Three Hundred" of Austin's first colonists. He was the founder of Harrisburg and the town, as well as the County of Harris, were named in his honor.
During her life, Mrs. Looscan was very active in the social and literary circles of Houston. She was one of the organizers and the first president of The Ladies Reading Club, and for nine years chairman of the executive board of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas.
She died in Houston on November 23, 1935, and was buried in Glenwood Cemetery, Houston. Her library of 1,500 works, mostly relating to Texas history, was donated to the Houston Public Library. Her portrait was given to the library in 1936, and a branch library was named in her honor in 1956.
During its seventy one year existence, Adele B. Looscan Elementary School has been a model of excellence in citizenship and education, and has served the community well in preparing its children to become productive members of society. We look forward to another seventy one years of even greater achievements.
