School Programs

BILINGUAL / ESL PROGRAM
   Bilingual / ESL classes are offered to students whose primary language is Spanish. This program offers students instruction in Spanish as well as skill development in English. A long term goal for Love is to offer a two - way bilingual program to all students so that all students at Love will become bi-literate and bilingual in both Spanish and English. Mastery of two languages will ensure that our students are prepared to work in a global society and with diverse populations.

COLLABORATIVES
Love collaborates with several business and educational agencies.
Agencies and projects are listed below.

Graduation Really Achieves Dreams: Project GRAD
Love Elementary is a member of the Project GRAD family. As a Project GRAD school, our goal is to prepare our students to go beyond high school and success in college by offering a challenging curriculum and unconditional support. To meet this goal, Love implements the following Project GRAD components:

* Consistency Management / Cooperative Discipline - builds and reinforces student self-discipline and responsibility for learning
* Success For All - a research-based reading program that incorporates Early Learning, Roots, Wings, and Family Support components
* Move It Math - hands-on instruction that leads to discovery and solid learning experiences
* Communities in Schools - a social service program that addresses student and family needs
* Scholarships - given to every student that graduates from Love's feeder pattern high school with at least a 2.5 GPA

The McNair Foundation
In providing a learning climate for the whole child, Love incorporates fine arts instruction into its curriculum. Our philosophy is that the arts are an essential part of the curriculum. Students are given the opportunity to develop artistic and musical abilities, which will benefit them once they enter the more formal fine arts programs at the middle and high school levels. With the assistance of the funds provided by McNair Foundation, the Reagan Vertical Team Fine Arts Coordinator, arranges for all of our students to have an opportunity to participate in fine arts fieldtrips, activities, and performances such as the following:
* Interactive Theater
* The Houston Children's Museum
* The Houston Museum of Fine Arts
* Glassel School of Art
* The Alley Theater
* Young Audiences
* Mobile Art Quest

Mexican Institute of Greater Houston & Technólogico de Monterrey
Later this year, Love Elem. will begin a new collaborative effort with the Mexican Institue of Greater Houston.  In partnership with Monterrey Tech (Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Monterrey), a world leader in distance education and a world-class university accredited in Texas, the Mexican Institute of Greater Houston is creating a network of Community Learning Centers/Centros Comunitarios de  Aprendizaje (CCAs) that provides access to education in Spanish via Internet and is a realistic option to empower Hispanic parents by accessing education and setting the example that will, in turn, influence their children to stay in school avoiding the drop-out option that hampers their advancement.  Love will become one of these Community Learning Centers.  Learn more about this endeavor at http://www.mexico-info.com/cca/

Reading First Grant
More than 35,000 Houston children will get additional  help learning to read because of a nearly $10-million grant awarded as part of the federal No Child Left Behind education act.  The grant  will allow 82 HISD elementary schools to take part in the “Reading First” program, which is designed to help children read at or above grade level by the end of the third grade. “Reading First” was a cornerstone of the No Child Left Behind Education Act of 2001.  Reading First gives every state an opportunity to use reading programs that research has proven to be effective.  The HISD “Reading First” program will include instruction in phonics, fluency, vocabulary development, and text comprehension. The grant will give each school a reading coach.

Houston Urban League Initiative in a Networked Community (HU-LINC)
All students at Love have an opportunity to strengthen their knowledge and skills in the area of science. HU-LINC is a consortium of Houston's business, community, civic, and cultural groups working with the Houston Independent School District to improve mathematics, science, and technology instruction for HISD students. Our HU-LINC Lead Teacher's in-depth science and technology training provided by collaborative efforts of all the major universities in the Houston area, including Baylor College of Medicine, supports the integration of science at all grade levels.

Love Garden
The Love Elementary Garden was originally created in conjunction with St. Thomas University.  During the first year of our garden,  St. Thomas provided equipment and supplies for the project. Love faculty and staff, students, and parents, along with St. Thomas volunteers provided the man power to prepare the ground and plant the garden. In subsequent years, The Family Service Center and the J. B. Corporation along with Love faculty and students have helped to maintain the garden.  Love students have learn about gardening while caring for the vegetables until harvesting.  They have also learned about taking care of various types of plants and flowers.

University of Houston
    Love houses a class of Block 1 teachers on our campus.

Love Elementary Also Works in Collaboration With the Following Organization:
* Greater Heights in Education Project
* Family Service Center
* Health Service Center at Hogg
