Lovett's Band Program

Including the
First Grade FLUTOPHONE and

The Second Grade RECORDER Ensembles

Band Director: Mrs. Croft

Mrs. Croft     Over the past few years, Lovett Elementary students have participated in a Band Program, which has won local, state and national acclaim. The Concert Band has given two clinics at the Texas Music Educators' Assn. Conference in San Antonio, is currently featured on a Texas Education Agency video, and  has performed for some of the most prestigious events in Galveston and Houston, including the Opening Ceremonies for the International Festival, when the audience included Mayor Bob Lanier, Houston City Council, the Spanish Consular Staff, and Spain's Royal Princess. In addition to performances for many civic and state-wide conventions, the group was chosen in 1995-96 to perform a concert at Walt Disney's EPCOT Center for "Magic Music Days"--one of only three elementary instrumental groups so honored in 25 years, and was chosen to represent Texas in the Washington, D.C., Bicentennial's "National Festival of the States"-May 2000. The Band has won trophies for top scores from all three judges at the HISD Concert Band Festivals each year since they were first permitted to compete in 1993. In addition, they hold five large trophies for "Superior Performance" and "Outstanding in Class", won at statewide Directors' Choice Festivals at San Antonio in 1998, The Woodlands in 1999 and Pearland High School in 2001.

ANY STUDENT MAY PARTICIPATE WHO IS WILLING TO UNDERTAKE A REASONABLE AMOUNT OF REGULAR HOME-PRACTICE. Given the size of the traditional band instruments, our first graders perform in a FLUTOPHONE ENSEMBLE, and our second graders in a RECORDER ENSEMBLE.  A FLUTOPHONE is a tunable, child's instrument with a pleasant tone, which is made for smaller fingers. The RECORDER, most poplar during the Middle Ages, is still played by adults today and is the ancestor of our flutes and clarinets. These two groups function as "The Band" for their respective grade levels.

A number of concerts are given by all groups throughout the school year. The Band also leads the student body in two all-school parades. Musical literature for the younger two groups consists mainly of the traditional folk songs, but the Concert Band regularly plays Bach, Handel, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky, Sibelius, Brahms, Schubert, Grieg and works of other "Classical" composers, as well as those of John Phillip Sousa and a number of contemporary composers. Reading music while playing under the conductor's baton is accomplished even by our first graders.
