Lovett's Orchestra Program

Director:  Dr. Jack Bevil

The Orchestra Program continues to grow and flourish here at Lovett, adding another dimension to the outstanding fine arts opportunities our school provides.  We always welcome new students in the lower grades, who wish to become orchestra members.

Beginning violins at Lovett are introduced to the instrument using the Suzuki method of instruction.   Based on the premise that musical ability can be achieved through careful listening and repetition (in the same manner that language is learned), playing the violin becomes a fun and exciting accomplishment.  In addition to learning the standard Suzuki repertoire, our violinists learn a broad range of musical styles, including familiar melodies, harmonized classical pieces, and catchy fiddle tunes.  Note reading is learned once a basic comfort level is reached on the instrument.

At Lovett, students are required to participate in one after-school rehearsal per week, with the day being determined by the skill level of the student. The strings are divided into four levels:
* Beginning OrchestraGirl with Violin
* Beginning Cello
* Advanced Orchestra
* Advanced Ensemble

A number of Lovett students earn places each year in the All-City Orchestra, and win medals for high achievement in the annual HISD Solo and Ensemble Contest.

Two major performances are given each year by all of the students in the Orchestra Program, and many smaller performances around the community are given by the Advanced Orchestra and Ensemble.

     Orchestra members are required to wear uniforms during performances.
