PTO Meeting Minutes for 2009-2010
November 6, 2009
Number of Attendees: 63

The meeting was called to order at 8:10 a.m. in the school cafeteria. Ms. Monaghan welcomed everyone. The agenda and budget were handed out. Minutes were passed from last meeting. There was a motion to approve the minutes by Mindy Travillian. The motion was seconded by Leslie Chase.

Susan Burns, PTO President discussed:

  • Made a few changes to the calendar.
  • Movie Night has been postponed until the spring due to the cooler temperatures in the evening.
  • Due to scheduling issues, Panda Express’ fundraiser has been replaced with Lenny’s on December 10th.
  • The April 22nd fundraiser will be Chuck E Cheese instead of Panda Express as noted on calendar.
  • Information will be coming home concerning those dates.

Brandi Bernard, Book Fair Chairperson discussed:

  • Volunteers are needed to help wrap wish list boxes for the teachers.
  • Handed out volunteer sheets for those who did not receive one in their Wednesday folder to help out at the Book Fair.
  • Books arrive on Monday, Nov. 9th and setup is Tuesday, Nov. 10th.
  • The Book Fair runs from November 12th-19th. It will be open during the turkey dinners.

Principals Report

  • Ms. Monaghan mentioned that Magnet Awareness Week is coming up. Please see Cara Boynton, Magnet Coordinator, if you are interested in helping out with the tours.
  • Coming up are the Turkey Dinners. Grades K, 2nd and 4th will be on Tuesday, Nov. 17th. Grades 1st, 3rd and 5th will be on Thursday, Nov. 19th.  Tickets will be sold closer to the day of this event. Do not buy a ticket for your child because they will be using their lunch card this year.
  • Bring a sack lunch on the day your grade level is not having their turkey dinner.
  • Band-A-Rama will begin at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov.18th in the cafeteria. We encourage everyone to come watch the Band, buy Pizza being sold by the PTO and shop at the Book Fair.
  • 4th Graders will be going on a filed trip to The Battleship Texas on Friday, Nov. 20th.
  • Jump Rope for Heart kick off will be on Monday, Nov.23rd at 8:30 a.m. in the cafeteria.
  • Band goes to HSPVA. No Extended Day!
  • Thanksgiving Holiday begins Nov. 25th-27th. Enjoy the Break!
  • Ms. Monaghan mentioned that December has a very busy calendar with all our performances. She encourages Kindergarten parents to take the kids to the programs. Also, to attend Holiday in the Park on Dec.3rd.
  • We will not have a PTO Meeting in December.
  • EPI online orders have not been delivered. If you have any questions please call 800-365-5345.
  • If you would like to help set up for Thanksgiving Lunches, please speak to nurse Thomas.

New Building

  • Ms. Monaghan mentioned that all permits have been approved for new building.
  • We have been approved for the temporary buildings to be brought in but the foundation must be laid first.
  • The NO PARKING signs in front of the school will be removed. Everyone must use the crosswalk!

Ms.Monaghan thanked everyone for stopping by!

After the PTO Meeting there was a Middle School Presentation for any interested parents.

October 2, 2009

Number of Attendees: 57

 

The meeting was called to order at 8:10 a.m. in the school library. The agenda and budget were handed out. Minutes were passed out from the last meeting. There was a motion to approve the minutes by Angela Marcum. The motion was seconded by Mindy Travillian.

 

Mindy Travillian, PTO Treasurer discussed:

  • Handed out an Income Statement Sheet which is done every month that shows how much money we have in the budget.
  • Income Statement shows that EPI bill has not been paid yet, which means sales will go down a little bit but will get more in from the online sales.
  •  Membership has gone down this year.
  • No questions asked about the budget.

Susan Burns, PTO President discussed:

  • Handed out volunteer sheets for Bake Sale and Book Fair.
  • Elizabeth Ray is working on compiling a list of stores and businesses that will contribute to Lovett.
  • Susan mentions that the Room Parent Meeting was successful. Reminds everyone to please order you’re class t-shirt and to help out your room parent.
  • Jill Vaughn needs volunteers to help out in the school store.

Principals Report

  • Ms. Monaghan mentions she needs help with traffic control. She is also trying to get the city to work with us on our parking situation. 
  • Ms. Monaghan is in the process of trying to form a new committee with parents to help out in the drop off area on rainy days. If you can help out with this please contact Angela Marcum.
  • Ms. Monaghan mentions that Ms. Kai, our teacher aid, is on FML from Lovett.  We hope she will return once her health improves.
  • Encourages the people who live in this community to help petition to have the No Parking signs in front of their homes taken down on Jason.  This will help when our construction begins and we can no longer use Birdwood for drop off or pick up.
  • Tours are coming up. Please contact Cara Boyton, Magnet Coordinator, if you are interested in helping with the tours.
  • Donna Reed mentions the Southwest Houston School Choice Forum will be on Saturday, Oct. 24th from 10:00a.m. – 12:00 noon at Westbury United Methodist Church for parents of fourth and fifth graders (looking at middle schools for the future). It is a chance to get more information about your school choices.
  • Los Tios Night had a great turn out.
  • Individual Pictures is on Thursday, Oct. 8th.
  • Donuts with Dad is on Thursday, Oct. 15th from 8:00-9:00a.m.
  • Chuck E Cheese Night is Thursday, Oct. 29th from 3:00-9:00 p.m.
  • Seven Acres has been cancelled due to the flu outbreak.  A spring visit will be scheduled at a later time.
  • Ms. Monaghan mentioned that we are on the road to recovery from the flu. Mr. Ramos and his crew have been sanitizing every classroom each night and this past weekend they spent about 10 hours doing some “extra” cleaning.  Thank you to our fabulous custodians.
  • Family Science Night coming up on Wednesday, Oct. 28th for Grades 3-5 from 6:00 p.m.- 7:15 p.m. Please RSVP on the form coming home.
  • Ms. Monaghan encourages everyone to get involved in the elections coming up in order to be informed on whom the candidates are and what they stand for.
  • The t-buildings are ready and are on hold to be delivered. The delivery and set up will be about 60-90 days. Update will be sent home in the Wednesday folder.
  • Ms. Monaghan encourages everyone to please keep attending the monthly PTO meetings and thanks everyone for stopping by.

Angela Marcum, our HISD Representative mentions the school board elections coming up in November. Mrs. Marcum encourages everyone to educate ourselves on who is running for the school board and who we want to represent us and to get out and vote on Election Day. She will be attending a district bond meeting next week with the new Superintendent.

September 11, 2009

The meeting started at 8:10 a.m. in the school cafeteria. Ms. Monaghan welcomed everyone and mentions that this is a great turn out and hopes we can keep it going all year. Susan Burns, PTO President called the meeting to order.

 

Mindy Travillian, PTO Treasurer discussed:

  • Handed out an Income Statement and PTO Agenda Sheet which is done every month. Mindy explains how the treasurer’s report works to the new Lovett parents.
  • The Fundraising Net Income is a list of items that will generate funds.
  • The first column shows how much we have actually generated which at the beginning is not much.  The middle is how much we plan our budget and how much we have to go.
  • In the School Support Expenses, the first column is how much we have actually spent so far and then we have our budget and then how much we have remaining in each budget item.
  • Each PTO Meeting she will present a copy of the Balance Sheet and Income Statement that shows where we stand.
  • We try to raise money for school items, such as landscaping, etc.
  • This year we will not have a big capital project but will be saving the money for the new school.
  • No Walk-A-Thon or Fall Carnival this year due to lack of space.
  • A motion to approve the budget for the year by Jeanette Balloun seconded by Donna Reed.  All in favor to approve the budget.

Susan Burns, PTO President discussed:

  • Mentions that almost all the committees are filled.
  • Volunteer forms will be coming home asking for volunteers for various events coming up.
  • New Book Fair Committee people needed that have experience.
  • Discussed with Ms. Monaghan about forming a committee to help come up with new fundraising ideas for this year.
  • Some ideas for fundraising already received are, a school wide Cookbook, Art Project ( T-shirts, greeting cards, etc. with your child’s artwork on it),  Inflatable outdoor movie screen with concession stand, a school-wide garage sale and a Mix 96.1 Family Fun Night.
  • EPI is due today. Online sales have been very successful.
  • PTO Membership Drive ends Thursday, September 17th.  Membership will get you the Directory.

 

Principals Report

  • Ms. Monaghan mentions that the PTO Agenda sheet lists all events throughout the year.
  • Introduces Theresa Coulthart, the school librarian, and representative for the staff and PTO.
  • EPI Fundraiser is due today. Prizes for 1rst, 2nd, and 3rd will be given to the highest seller for students who made the deadline only.
  • 5th graders will be leaving for camp on Tuesday, Sept.15th and return on Friday, Sept. 18th.
  • Los Tios Night is Wednesday, Sept. 16th. Percentage of the sales goes to Lovett PTO.
  • Membership Drive continues until September 17th. Make sure you join the PTO. All classes with 100% participation win an Ice Cream Party with Ms. Monaghan!
  • Room Parent Meeting on Thursday, Sept. 17th at 8:05 in the library.
  • Reading Parent Meeting listed on the calendar is two different times for grades k-2 and grades 3-5. You only have to attend one. It will be the same topic. We are offering a morning meeting and afternoon meeting. Heather Gaines, our Literacy Coach, will present information about Lovett’s reading program and give you tips on how you can collaborate with the classroom teacher to strengthen your child’s reading.
  • The Writing Academy is coming on Tuesday, Sept. 22nd, for 4th grade students.
  • Progress Reports will be coming home.
  • Fall Holiday on Monday, Sept. 28th.
  • Early Dismissal on Wednesday, Sept. 30th at 12:30. No Extended Day!
  • Ms. Monaghan mentions that we are going to have a busy October calendar.
  • Handed out PTO Meeting Dates Sheets.
  • Ms. Monaghan thanks everyone for stopping by.

 

Angela Marcum, our HISD Representative, mentions the school board elections coming up in November. Also, an HISD Board Meeting was held to vote to approve a $13 million dollar bill for Bellaire High School for Science Labs and new wing. Mrs. Marcum encourages everyone to attend these monthly meetings in order be informed about our schools and community.

Lee Burns motions to adjourn the meeting at 8:44 a.m., seconded by Susi Hessel.

PTO Welcome Breakfast in Cafeteria at 8:05 a.m.
Ms. Monaghan welcomed everyone and conducted the meeting.

This will be Ms. Monaghan’s 6th year at Lovett.
Lovett Elementary is an EXEMPLARY SCHOOL!
An events sheet and PTO Meeting Minutes 2009-2010 already scheduled was given.

Ms. Monaghan introduces PTO Board Members:

  • Secretary – Janet Shafer

Susan Burns, PTO President discussed:

  • Next PTO Meeting is scheduled for Friday, September 11th and will be discussing alternate fundraisers that we can do this year.
  • Please email any idea’s you have to Susan at susanburns@gmail.com.

 Ms. Monaghan discussed:

  • Introduces Teresa Coulthard, our school librarian, and the representative for the staff on the PTO.
  • Mentions that PTO Meeting Minutes will be posted on the Lovett website at http://www.houstonisd.org./ click on Lovett.
  • Introduces Cara Boynton, Magnet Coordinator, who is on her second year and is doing a great job. Also, Sandra Nelson who has been her trainer and mentor.
  • Ms. Monaghan thanked Mr. Ramos and his crew for working hard getting the temporary buildings and the school ready over the summer.

New Building

  • Ms. Monaghan mentions that the ground breaking ceremony in the first part of September has been delayed due to permits and getting our temporary buildings.
  • Introduces some of the people that were on the building committee last year that helped design the new school.
  • Ms. Monaghan mentioned that information will be coming home on parking situation and will try to get the city to work with us on parking.
  • David Andrews, the Architect with PGAL, designed the new school. He also designed Pershing Middle School.
  • Ms. Monaghan mentions that the architects are ready and we passed the budget. Drawings will be set up in front of the school.
  • Move in date is open but right now they say January 2011, if it goes as planned.
  • Ms. Monaghan mentions that we will not move into the new building until it is completed.
