Science Lab
All students in grades 2-5 visit the Science Lab once a week. While in the lab, students perform hands-on experiments, using a wide variety of tools and materials, which coincide and reinforce what is being studied in the classroom. The students work in cooperative groups while using the scientific method of exploration covering the content areas of the nature of science, physical science, earth science, and life science.
When in the lab, students learn the fundamentals of laboratory safety through the use of equipment and manipulation of materials. Themes used in the lab are systems, models, constancy and change. Skills reinforced are reading, writing, computation, communication, critical thinking skills, inquiry methods, and the use of technology. The goals focused on are creating science literate citizens, gaining conceptual and factual knowledge, expanding intellectual skills, and becoming problem solvers. Culminating with the Science Fair, students are able to create their own explorations through topics they have an interest in.
Through fun, focused, interactive and hands-on activities, students learn to love, appreciate, and understand science more fully.
