to Ben Milam Elementary School. Milam is part of the Houston
Independent School District.The school is located in the
Heights area and is part of the North
Central District.
In 1912, a school was built at
5000 Center Street by the Brunner Independent School District.
This School was called Brunner High School. S.P. Waltrip was the
superintendent.
In 1913-1914, Brunner
Independent School District became part of the Houston Independent
School District and the name was changed to West End Junior High
School, consisting of grades one through nine. The principal was
Mr. Washington B. Daves and the superintendent was Mr. P.W. Horn.
The junior high students were
transferred to George Washington Junior High School in September,
1926, and the elementary school became Ben Milam Elementary
School, with Miss Daisy Cookenboo as principal.
Due to structural damage, the
building was closed in December, 1977. While new facilities were
being constructed, students were housed for three years at the
Doris Miller campus, 5216 Feagan.
Our beautiful new building, Ben
Milam, located at 1100 Roy Street, opened in August, 1980, with
Mr. Leon Mitchison as principal.

En 1912, una
escuela fué contruida en 5000 de la calle Center por el distrito
escolar independiente de Brunner. Esta escuela fué llamada
preparatória Brunner. S. P. Waltrip era el superintendente.
En 1913-1914, el
distrito escolar independiente Brunner formó parte de el distrito
escolar de Houston y el nombre cambió a preparatória West End,
con grados de primero a noveno. El director fué el señor
Washington B. Daves y el supertintendente fue el señor P. W.
Horn.
Los estudiantes de
la preparatória fueron transferidos a la escuela preparatória
George Washington en septiembre de 1926 y se convirtió en la
escuela primária Ben Milam, con la señora Daisy Cookenboo como

estructurales, la escuela fué cerrada en diciembre de 1997.
