PTO Minutes for 10/16/08

 

Call to order by Michelle Vanderwater, President, at 7:02 p.m.

 

Principal’s Report given by Cappy Selig

·        Follow-up to Hurricane Ike

o       HISD will not require schools to make up the 6 missed days

o       Individual school plan to make up for educational needs; Parker’s includes:

§         Postponing field trips

§         Tutoring has begun earlier in the year

§         Visible word boards

·        Report on class sizes: there are not too many over this year

·        Description of Fun Fest & Parker’s 50th Birthday Celebration to be held on Saturday, October 25th

·        Electronic marquee on order

·        Painting of bathrooms should be complete by the weekend of October 18th

 

Magnet Coordinator’s Report by Carol Kehlenbrink

·        Flyers regarding Parker’s 50th Birthday Celebration are available for distribution

·        Chorus, strings and guitars will perform

·        Advanced Band & Jazz Band will perform at Fun Fest with alumni band members

·        Magnet Awareness Week has been delayed due to Hurricane Ike until the week of December 8th

·        Application deadline will remain January 9th

·        The 5th grade packets will be ready for pick up next week; they will have everything needed EXCEPT the first report card (copies should be made for each application, as these will be considered the original)

·        Westbury United Methodist Church is hosting a Southwest Area school forum on Saturday, October 25th from 1 to 3 p.m. and she will be representing Parker

 

Minutes from September 5, 2008, meeting presented and approved.

 

Treasurer’s Report by Robin Bollman

·        Updated budget and expenses handouts presented

·        After care expenses haven’t been paid

·        Sally Foster expenses need to be paid

·        Rebate from school supplies not yet applied

·        Motion to approve and seconded.  All approved.  Motion carried.

 

Fun Fest by Melanie Rosen for Shana Sonnier

·        Activity passes, food coupons, raffle tickets and t-shirts on sale the entire week prior to Fun Fest, as well as the day of the event

·        Volunteers still needed to assist with games

·        Parker Pops to serve food

 

New Tempo Program by Ms. Benne & Ms. Nelson

·        Description of new curriculum (“Music Together”); to begin next session

o       Teachers are requesting licensing and purchase of new/additional instruments; total of ~$1,400 (to be reviewed by Executive Board)

·        Brief recap of the Tempo Classes

o       Toddler music classes; 8 weeks per session

o       Mondays, 9a.m. and 12p.m.; 45 minute classes

o       Classes fill quickly; very positive feedback

 

Directory by Rhonda Pennington

·        Description of personal and business ad space given

·        All ads are due November 14th

·        St. Luke’s will graciously print the directory again for a nominal fee

·        There will be no extras printed; discussion of the option to preorder/pay in advance for additional copies (no decision made)

·        Goal to have directories distributed the first week of December

 

Educational Enhancements by Jennifer Martin for Melinda Elder

·        Description of Odyssey of the Mind, Junior Great Books & ??? given

·        Invitation to get involved

·        Flyer in upcoming Tuesday folder

 

Book Fair by Jennifer Martin for Jennifer McCleskey

·        Book Fair week is November 10 – 14

·        Family Night & Spaghetti Dinner on Thursday, November 13 with Annual Pops Concert

·        60 volunteers needed; watch for flyers to sign up

 

Family Night by Melody Soice

·        Description given of Pops Concert

·        Spaghetti Dinner needs volunteer cooks and donations of homemade desserts

·        More to come

 

5th Grade Party by Autumn Jamison for Desiree Slack

·        Brief introduction of the event to be held at the end of the year

·        Handout given to all 5th grade parents with contact information

·        Encouraged all to get involved in some capacity

 

Old Business by Michelle Vanderwater

·        Cafeteria clean up is on hold briefly, but will proceed

·        New shed for storage of Fun Fest items

o       Original shed approved is not sturdy enough

o       Request additional $500 to purchase Tuff shed.  Motion to approve and seconded.  All approved.  Motion passed.

·        Marquee ordered

 

New Business by Michelle Vanderwater

·        Rules and Policies of Distribution of Parker PTO Funds reviewed and distributed.  Motion to approve and seconded.  All approved.  Motion passed.

·        Copy room policies reviewed: must have completed form attached

·        All correspondence must be approved by either Cappy, Carol, Alean or Bonny
