Family Science and Math Night is an informal event held
after school. The goal of family night is to give
parents and children an opportunity to work and learn
science and math together. Hands-on activities that use
easy-to-find, inexpensive materials let families explore
the ways in which science and math play a role in daily
life.
Parental involvement in Family Science and Math is key
to the program’s success. By showing an interest in
science and math and making time to explore ideas and
conduct simple investigations, parents can have a
positive influence on children who may otherwise decide
that science and math is too hard, too abstract, or
boring. An added benefit of Family Night activities is
that they provide parents with a link to school science
and math curriculum. Doing science and math at home
opens the door to talk with kids about what they’re
learning in school and can help reinforce the idea that
anyone can be a scientist or mathematician.

Family Math and Science Night is a way for parents and
children to spend time together doing something that’s
fun, challenging, and important. It’s also a way for
parents and children to talk to and help each other
while they develop an understanding of Science and
Mathematical concepts and strategies. It involves
parents and children in problem solving, experimenting,
and discovering together.
