Poe In The Know

January 14, 2008 A PTO Publication Edition No. 9

ATTENTION 1st AND 2nd GRADE PARENTS
All first and second grade students will be required to meet promotion standards in HISD. One of the requirements is scoring at least 80% on the  High Frequency Word Evaluation.  The High Frequency Word Evaluation (HFWE) assesses a child's reading ability by having a child read and then say aloud words that are shown by the teacher. The HFWE will be administered in English and Spanish, depending on the language of reading instruction of the student, on April 1, through April 14, 2008.

We are providing parents with a set of High Frequency Word Cards in English or Spanish. These word cards will be sent home in the January 7th Monday folder. These word cards are also available on the HISD Web site (www.houstonisd.org) through the "Parent -Student" link under Student Requirements. Any questions, contact your child's teacher or Bertha Garcia or Nancy Davault.

We encourage you to use these flash cards at home to prepare your child for the High Frequency Word Evaluation. Use the flashcards to help your child practice reading the words at home so they will be better prepared for the test.  As you listen to your child read daily, help him or her recognize the High Frequency Words in books and in the environment.
