Neighborhood Gifted and Talented Program

The Neighborhood Gifted and Talented Program at Poe Elementary is designed to meet the needs of those students who demonstrate the characteristics of advanced learners. Our Program was developed focusing on the compliance requirements outlined in the Texas State Plan for the Education of Gifted / Talented Students.

In accordance with HISD policy, all applicants are evaluated on multiple criteria, including Ability and Achievement Testing, Parent and Teacher Rating, Grades and Overcoming Obstacles. Teachers, parents, or students can nominate a student for the Neighborhood Gifted and Talented Program. Once nominated, the parents must complete an application. At this time, the data is gathered and a student profile is completed. A student qualifies or does not qualify based on the completion of the district approved Profile Sheet.

The specific Program at Poe allows students to be identified as early as Kindergarten. All identified gifted / talented students are clustered within heterogeneous classes. Teachers are able to individualize their programs to meet these students needs using guided reading and math curriculum as well as modifying the general academic program in depth, complexity and pacing. These students as well as all students in the class are taught and challenged at the level of their abilities based on Bloom’s Levels of Understanding. In third and fourth grades, the identified students have a weekly pullout program that focuses on critical thinking.

If at any time it is determined that a student is not able to meet the requirements of the program, a Growth Plan is implemented using District criteria. If the student is not able to meet the requirements of the Growth Plan, the Committee may determine that exiting the Program is the most appropriate action. Parents may also request the removal of a child from the Neighborhood Gifted and Talented Program at any time.

All Poe teachers have received the state required Gifted and Talented training. In addition, annual continuing education of at least six hours is mandatory for all teachers with identified Gifted and Talented students. Instructional strategies that are emphasized through teacher training are problem based learning, adding depth and complexity to the curriculum, designing lessons with product differentiation, integration of subject matter, independent research, interdisciplinary studies, and developing creativity.

The Neighborhood Gifted and Talented Program, like any other program at Poe, is designed to meet the needs of all students.
