Art
Elementary school art has an important and unique place in the total educational growth and development of pupils. All pupils, to different degrees and in different ways have creative ability, which can be either discouraged or developed at school. Every student should have the opportunity to think , act, and feel creatively with the visual art materials. With the proper guidance in art one can become more independent, critical, and resourceful in their judgments.

Physical Education ...........(visit the Poe PE Website at http://www.homestead.com/poesports/home.html )
The objectives of the Physical Education program are to equip students with lifelong skills in fitness and recreation and to beneficially influence their psychological and social development by exposure to the principles of team work, fair play, and self-discipline. Curriculum includes the fundamentals of standard team sports, incentive group games, and fitness conditioning and testing.

POE GYMNASTICS TEAM
The gymnastics team is a "competitive" team for students in grades 2-5 who have a basic gymnastics background and are ready to learn and perform USGA age group level routines in competition. Team members are chosen by ability, based on required elements. Approximately 40 gymnasts are chosen for the team to compete in either the novice or advanced levels. The team competes in HISD sponsored gymnastic meets during the school year.

POE TRACK TEAM
The track team is a "competitive" track and field team for students in grades 2-5. Team members are chosen for their running ability as determined by their times in a 100 meter dash and Mile Run times from last. Approximately 40 athletes are chosen for the team, competing in two age groups. Division I is for athletes 9 & under and Division II is for athletes 10 & up. The team competes in HISD sponsored track meets during the school year.

Dance
The primary goals of Dance Education at Poe are:

Science Lab
Poe students visit the Science Lab each week for a "hands-on" science experience. We experiment inside the lab and outside in the environment in our court yard classroom. The Science Specialists work with the classroom teachers to integrate science and math activities between the lab and classroom.

Music
Music at Poe involves four basic strands--perception, creative expression/performance, historical and cultural heritage, and critical evaluation. These strands provide broad, unifying structures for organizing the knowledge and skills students are expected to acquire. In music, students develop their intellect and refine their emotions, understanding the cultural and creative nature of musical artistry and making connections among music, the other arts, technology, and other aspects of social life. Through creative performance, students apply the expressive technical skills of music and critical-thinking skills to evaluate multiple forms of problem solving.

By reflecting on musical periods and styles, students understand music's role in history and are able to participate successfully in a diverse society. Students analyze and evaluate music, developing criteria for making critical judgments and informed choices.

Suzuki Violin
Suzuki Violin is offered at Poe for students in all grades. Each child in the program receives two lessons a week, one individual and one small group. Instruction is based on the Suzuki philosophy and repertoire. A parent is required to attend the individual lesson every week to observe so they can guide the home practice. Students are taught to read music and have several opportunities to perform throughout the year.to the top
