Programs

.......Poe Elementary offers a Fine Arts and Academics Magnet Program . Our classes cover grades pre-kindergarten-5, including bilingual programs in all grades. From kindergarten through fifth grade, Poe students receive instruction in both academics and the arts. One of the goals of  Poe is to meet the differing individual needs and interests of the students. The core academic courses are taught in content area blocks of instructional time. Students identified as  Gifted and Talented attend advanced ability grouped classes for their Language Arts/Reading and Mathematics blocks. Students are also instructed in Art, Music, Dance, Physical Education, Science Lab, and Spanish..

OTHER PROGRAMS

Early Literacy
Poe Literacy Lab was created in 1996 under the mandates of Governor George Bush and President Bill Clinton, that all children must read on level by third grade. The Literacy Lab offers intensive, small group instruction which allows for individual teaching to enrich personal skills. Early Intervention is critical for students to become successful readers. The mission of the Lab is to support teachers, students, and parents in the quest of reading and developing independent and self-reliant readers who appreciate and enjoy the written word. The Literacy Lab was honored in receiving an Academics 2000 grant from the state of Texas.

Science
Poe students visit the Science Lab each week for a "hands-on" science experience. We experiment inside the lab and outside in the environment in our court yard classroom. The Science Specialists work with the classroom teachers to integrate science and math activities between the lab and classroom.

Writers Workshop
Teachers are trained to implement Writer’s Workshop (modeled after Lucy Calkins’ Teachers College Writing Project) in the classroom. Model lessons are taught by the Writing Specialist and lead teachers to help the classroom teachers become writers themselves. The emphasis of the Writers Workshop is on authentic work products and a portfolio that evidences student work over time.

Reading
Guided Reading provides strategies for classroom instruction in grades K-3 in which students learn to read. Teachers work with small groups on individualized reading levels. Child-centered, literacy based learning rotations (learning centers) with hands-on activities that are age appropriate for the grade level are set up in the room for the students not involved at that time in the small group. Students move to Literature Circles in grades 4-5 as they become independent readers and read to learn. Four to five students work in small groups discussing novels chosen according to student interests. Students lead discussions to determine an agenda and tasks. The teacher acts as coach, observing group interaction, developing mini-lessons as needed and elevating the level of reading in the groups.
