Gifted and Talented Program (formerly SIGHTS)
The program begins at the end of Kindergarten when students are identified as Gifted/Talented. During First Grade, appropriate modifications are made to classroom instruction to meets the needs of the GT students.  The Gifted and Talented Committee evaluates standardized test scores, grades, observations, and teacher recommendations to identify students for enrichment instruction.

Learning Resource Center
The Learning Resource Center (LRC) is a classroom managed by a learning specialist and teaching assistants. Based on the inclusion model of student support in the least restrictive environment, the three components of education on our campus (general, special and bilingual) join forces to meet the needs of students with individual learning differences. Students and their teachers receive support before, during and after referral and/or placement in special education programs. Collaborative efforts, technical assistance and proactive interventions facilitate success, respect and learning for all. Go to the Learning Resource Center page to learn more.

Speech Therapy
The school speech pathologist provides therapy for those children who have been identified as having deficits in the areas of sound production (articulation), language skills (vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, comprehension), social use of language, fluency, and voice. The students range in age from three to eleven. The instruction is tailored to each child's specific needs.

Literacy Lab
Poe Literacy Lab was created in 1996 under the mandates of Governor George Bush and President Bill Clinton, that all children must read on level by third grade. The Literacy Lab offers intensive, small group instruction which allows for individual teaching to enrich personal skills. Early Intervention is critical for students to become successful readers. The mission of the Lab is to support teachers, students, and parents in the quest of reading and developing independent and self-reliant readers who appreciate and enjoy the written word. The Literacy Lab was honored in receiving an Academics 2000 grant from the state of Texas.

Bilingual Classes
Poe has one bilingual class at each grade level. These classes are taught by teachers who speak both Spanish and English with their students. The curriculum is presented in the students' first language, Spanish, with additional practice in English.
