Competitions

Name That Book is an HISD competition sponsored by Librarian, Michelle Smith.  Her assistants are Lynda Lanham and Connie Greer.  There is a K-2 and a 3-5 level of competition.  Our school competes in both.  HISD puts out a list of 30-35 books (these lists include the 2 by 2 books for the lower grades and the Bluebonnet Books for the 3-5 students)  Six students work as a team answering questions where the answer is the name of the book.  The K-2 students have a flip chart where they pick the cover.  The 3-5 team has a dry erase board where they have to write the title.  They compete against other HISD schools in a preliminary round and then the winners go to the finals.  Our school has come in first place in the district in the K-2 and second place in the district in the 3-5 in the past.  We have made it to the finals numerous times.  This year we have two Name That Book clubs, one for each contest.  The 3-5 club is picked by exam.  The K-2 club is picked from experiences with the children and recommendations from teachers.

Science Fair is an HISD competition sponsored by Science Magnet Lab teacher, Mary Fallon.  Students begin to prepare in January in class and with a Saturday morning parent meeting.  Projects are due in March.  Judges are community volunteers.  Winners will go on to the District competition.

Spelling Bee is a National competition.  We start preparing in September.  Students are provided practice time every Tuesday and Thursday morning through games.  The school-wide bee is held in January.  A champion and alternate are sent to the West Region Bee in February. Spelling Bee
