Nurse’s Station
Debbie Morice, RN, MSN
I will be screening children in grades Pre-K, K, 1st, 3rd, and 5th for hearing and vision in the next two months. If you receive notification that your child does not pass the screening, please take your child and the referral from to a doctor that specializes in the eye as soon as possible. Children whose families meet income criteria and do not have vision insurance, CHIPS or Medicaid, may qualify to receive a grant from the Eye Care for Kids Foundation for a free eye exam and a pair of glasses. Please contact me for this information.
Select grade levels will also be screened for the Acanthosis Nigricans marker. Acanthosis Nigricans is a skin condition that signals high insulin levels in the body and is considered a risk factor for the development of diabetes. If your child has this marker, he/she will be referred to a physician. Please return the form to me after being filled out by the physician.
Nurse’s Notes: Please consider getting your child a flu shot this season. Reminder: HISD policy states that children must be excluded from school if they have a fever and must be fever free (without Motrin, Tylenol etc) for 24 hours before returning. For parents of children with asthma: Have you gotten me the physician’s order and rescue inhaler to be kept in the clinic? Thank you for helping keep Red a safe place.
