Drop Off and Pick Up
Dismissal Procedures: Switching for Safety!
In order to provide for a safer and more efficient dismissal process, please note the following changes to our pick-up procedures beginning Monday, November 9, 2009.
MORNING DROP OFF PROCEDURES
Kindergarten and first grade students and their older siblings should be dropped off in the front circle drive. Second, third, fourth, and fifth grade students should be dropped off on Avalon Place at the side gate entrance near the rear of the school. Buses drop off students in the back near the teacher/staff parking lot along San Felipe.
Please note that there are no changes to morning drop-off procedures at this time. To review, morning drop off is as follows:
- Car drop-off will continue to be located at the front circle drive (K-1) and Avalon Place (2nd-5th) in the mornings.
- Please note that there is no left turn from Kirby into the circle drive during drop-off and dismissal times.
- Please do not drop off children at any other location than the two designated points.
- Buses will continue to drop off students in the back near the teacher parking lot.
- If students arrive after 7:55 am, please use the circle drive for drop-off. Campus gates are secured and locked after 7:55 am.
NEW AFTERNOON DISMISSAL PROCEDURES
CAR PICK-UP
Kindergarten and first grade students and their older siblings will be picked up in the back of the school close to the staff parking lot, where the buses previously loaded for pick-up. The pick-up line will start at the covered walkway leading into the Kindergarten/Science lab hallway and will continue around the fenced-in curve near the playgrounds and onto San Felipe. The ONLY way to enter this carpool line is to head east on San Felipe and turn right into the carpool line. There will be no left turns from San Felipe into the line. All traffic exiting the pick-up line MUST turn right onto San Felipe. There will be no left turns onto San Felipe during dismissal. Please do not park in the staff parking lot during dismissal.
For the safety of pedestrians and smooth traffic flow, please use main streets in the area such as River Oaks, San Felipe, Westheimer, and Kirby to reach the school during dismissal. See the attached map for suggested routes.
Second through fifth graders will continue to be picked up at designated areas on Avalon Place (no changes). Please form one pick-up line on Avalon Place and pick up your child only when you pull up to the designated pick-up point at curbside. Traffic flow for drop-off/pick-up on Avalon is one way, going east to west. Please do not attempt to pick up students before or after the loading location. Please do not allow your child to walk across Avalon in order to walk home or to walk to a vehicle. This is extremely dangerous as it requires children to walk between other cars and to cross the traffic proceeding along Avalon Place, which is not always visible due to the car pool lane. Please heed NO PARKING signs/times on Avalon Place. When stacking on south-bound Kirby to turn right on Avalon, please do not block the entrances or exits to circle drive. PLEASE DO NOT BLOCK ANY OF THE CROSSWALKS.
Drivers must stay with their cars while waiting in line. Children must remain in their designated areas with ROE staff members until called for loading. Children must exit and enter vehicles from the passenger (curb) side at the designated loading area only. Parents may not walk up to the carpool loading zone to pick up children. For the safety of the children, please do not use cell phones during drop-off and dismissal as required by law.
BUSES
Students who travel by HISD buses will now be loading buses for afternoon pick-up in the front circle drive. Buses will continue to drop off students in the back near the teacher parking lot. Parents parking in circle drive during dismissal will need to remain in their spaces if blocked by a bus or if buses are loading in the afternoon.
WALKERS
Walkers are considered any child who walks home or who walks to meet their parent or guardian and then proceeds to a parked car in order to be driven home.
The walker dismissal area will continue to be located in its original location at the steps at the end of the long sidewalk on Avalon leading into the building near the nurse’s office. Any child, K-5, who is a walker must use this exit at dismissal. Parents who previously waited on foot by the gate outside of the 3-4-5 grade hallway in order to walk their children home or to a car are asked to walk down to the walker dismissal area. Please do not allow your child to walk across Avalon in order to walk home or to walk to a vehicle We appreciate your support of this safer procedure.
Please hold hands with students while crossing the street. Always keep children within the white crosswalk lines.
Thank you for your understanding and patience as we make changes to improve the safety of dismissal, as well as provide for a smoother, quicker process! Please share this information with any additional caregivers that may assist your child during drop-off and dismissal times.

Communications
There are labeled boxes and mail baskets outside the ASP office for most PTO-related communications material. Any information, questions, forms and any appropriate communications can be placed in these boxes and baskets at any time during the day. Information can also be dropped off in the front office. Any communications for ROE staff can be left with the front office staff to be placed in the appropriate mail box. Every Tuesday, students take home green folders with school-related and other relevant information. The Greensheet, a weekly newsletter, contains the latest news, information and notices for the school community and is one of the publications that goes home in the green folder. PTO flyers that are to go in the green folders should be approved by the principal prior to mass printing.
The printed and online directories contain parent contact details as a convenience to other parents. This information is provided for your personal use. No commercial or solicitation use of any kind is approved or permitted. This information may not be published in any format or distributed to anyone.
Room Parents are the liaison between teachers and their class parents. If you send an email to more than one recipient at a time, use yourself as the sole To address and place all other recipients in the BCC (Blind Carbon Copy) field. Use of the BCC field hides the list of recipients and precludes harvesting email addresses from the email.
The ROE Store sends periodic mass email to all parents registered at the store with information about online logins, ASP online registration, school directory updates, and PTO events/items available for purchase. To ensure these emails are not put in your junk email folder, add no-reply@myschoolvalet.com to your safe list. |
