From the desk of Mrs. shenker

As our students and teachers settle into routines, we can now shift our focus to learning. I am happy to report on the following initiatives.
We are focusing on accelerated math in 5th grade this year. Several staff members recently attended the 6th Grade Math Academy provided by the district for middle school math teachers. This year, ROE 5th graders will learn 6th grade math concepts in addition to the 5th grade curriculum. A pre-test and post-test will be administered to track the progress of our students against their middle school counterparts. As a former 6th grade teacher, I am very excited about this initiative...I am even hoping to teach a little during the course of the year!
We are continuing to add to our technology resources. River Oaks Elementary was recently named a winner in the Superintendent’s Attendance Challenge. We will be rewarded with an additional laptop cart and 30 computers!  We have also ordered a cart with 40 iTouch devices. The ROE Library Alumni Committee provided funding for additional wireless access points over the summer. We are on our way!
Reading fluency is critical to academic success. We know that if a student leaves second grade as an advanced reader, they are on track for college and career readiness. This year we are implementing strategies to increase fluency rates and monitor progress. Have a great week!

roe directory

It's that time again! Enter your contact info online today to be included in this year's school Directory. We'll use the same info as we printed last year, so please update your info if it has changed. Kids love having their own Spirit Ad in the Directory, and prices start at $18 for a 2" square ad.

Make yours today, purchase online, and email it to us. What could be easier? Flyers with more info including different ad sizes are available online and in the PTO hallway. The Business Ads deadlines have been extended to Sept 12. If you know a business interested in supporting our school with an ad please let us know.
Directory Deadlines:

  1. Sept 2 - Update your contact info online
  2. Sept 3 - Spirit Ads due if you want them printed with your child's class
  3. Sept 12 - Final deadline for Business Ads and late Spirit Ads

For more Directory information including links to the Spirit Ad and Business Ad flyers, how to update your information, and to purchase ads online, go to http://roepto.org/school-directory/.
Want to help with Directory coordination? Send an email to Directory@riveroakspto.org.
Need Help with the ROE Store? For Directory related questions or issues, email directory@riveroakspto.org. If you are having other issues with the store, use the "Contact Us" left-hand link to log your issue or send an email to roestore@riveroakspto.org.

ROE Spirit Day

Fridays are ROE Spirit Day so be sure to purchase the new spirit T-shirt from the School Store and wear it on Fridays!

Looking for a carpool?

Today in your child's green folder you will find a Carpool Matching Form. If your family is interested in carpooling, the ROE PTO and staff would like to help you connect with another family in your area.  Just fill out the matching form by this Friday, September 3, and we will let you know how you can participate.

SALLY FOSTER fundraiser

Thanks to all our wonderful volunteers who distributed Sally Foster packets last week! If you did not receive a packet, extra sales kits are above the Sally Foster PTO locker in the kindergarten hallway. To sell Sally      Foster items, please go online to www.fundraising.entertainment.com and click on the "Seller Section" to obtain your student seller id. If you use a student seller id, you can get extra prize credit if buyers spend more online than the $20 gift card. If you don't want to register online, you can still sell Sally Foster gift cards without the student seller id and receive $20 in prize credit per card. All orders and payments are due on Wednesday, September 15. If you continue to sell online after Sept. 15, our school will get credit for the sales. Please turn orders in to the Sally Foster locker. Thanks for your participation! If you have any questions, please email me at collmorris@yahoo.com.

fall frenzy donations needed

We are collecting donations for our upcoming fall fundraising event, The Fall Frenzy, to be held Friday, November 12 at the Houston Club. Proceeds will go toward an exciting new science lab at ROE.
Do you have items such as unused gift certificates, unopened toys/games, a bottle of special wine, or inventory from your business to donate? Would you be willing to donate sports or other tickets, your vacation home, or products or services from your business? Almost anything you have can be used directly to benefit our students every day at ROE while giving you a tax deduction where allowed by law. Please contact Beth Rivera to arrange your donation pick-up: 713-521-2243 or hellobethm@gmail.com. We look forward to having your support for this fun event.

PICTURE DAY

Would you like the chance to meet the teachers and kids at ROE? Need a little exercise? Well, we are still looking for Parent Volunteers for Picture Day this SEPTEMBER 13th. If you would like to volunteer to help for the morning of Picture Day, please e-mail Picture Day Coordinators: Vicky Estrera (vickytestrera@yahoo.com) or Wendy Caldwell (roecaldwell@gmail.com) to sign-up. It will be a lot of fun!
INDIVIDUAL PICTURES will be taken SEPTEMBER 13th. Class Pictures and Make-Up individual pictures are scheduled for October 25th. Please remember that currently Spring Pictures will be OPTIONAL.

Easy Money for roe

Look for the Box Top flyer that came home today. Keep collecting Box Tops and labels from Campbell and Tyson products throughout the semester. The class that collects the most will win a pizza party!  Box Tops and labels can be turned in at any time to your classroom teacher or placed in the collection boxes located on top of the PTO lockers in the Kindergarten hallway. Make sure they are bundled in groups of 10 and have your teacher’s name on them. The winning class will be announced in December!
Don’t forget to link your Kroger and Randall’s shopping cards to ROE! It’s easy to do and the money will really add up for our school! Look for the forms in your child’s green folder today. Thanks for helping ROE! -Caroline Sterner, Affinity Programs

spirit store

We are happy to announce that the Zip Binders will be in next week! Due to the overwhelming request at the Meet and Greet, we ordered more binders in Red, Blue, Green, Heather Gray, Pink, and Purple with ROE lettering! Place your orders now because the binders go fast! We also have the new ROE Reusable Grocery bags in stock! What a fun way to represent ROE while you grocery shop in the stores that are a part of our Affinity Programs as well. Order forms are located on top of the glass case outside of the cafeteria. Online orders are also available. All orders received will be delivered to the oldest child’s classroom in your family. Thanks for supporting ROE!!!

Runners, Start Your Engines!

ROE FUN RUN 2010 – Saturday, Sept 25th, 9am-11:30.
For all of you new to ROE, this is a truly FUN event for the entire family. This is an ROE school wide running tradition. All family members are encouraged to attend. The day begins with a light and fun stretch lead by Coach Bomersbach followed by everyone running one lap together lead by Principal Shenker! Moms, dads, and anyone 6th grade and older may compete in a lap race. Each grade will then compete against their classmates. This can get very competitive, but we cheer on everyone to the finish line! A wheel barrow race, moon walks, great music and games fills the morning. There will be plenty of food and drink for everyone.
Volunteers are needed! We need helpers as little as 30 minutes as well as leader roles. You can contact us at: fun-run@riveroakspto.org. You can visit the school website to see the schedule of the day and the different volunteer positions. http://roepto.org/family-fun-run/.
Registration forms will be sent out next week. For those who want to do so now, you can print out the form from the school website or go to the school store                on-line (which is a different website): http://riveroakspto.myschoolvalet.com/

Summer Millionaire Club Readers!

If all students in Houston I.S.D. have read five books this summer, then they will have read 1 million books!
Students brought home a Summer Reading ‘Millionaire Club’ Reading Ticket during the last few weeks of school last year. On the back, they should record at least 5 books that were read over vacation. Each student who has completed and returned their ticket will receive a special bookmark to recognize their efforts as well as a window decal.
You can find and print additional copies of the Millionaire Club Reading Ticket Log by visiting the ROE Library page, and clicking on the ‘Summer Reading’ link.
Be sure to return the completed ticket to your teacher, or to Ms. Eastman, ROE Librarian labeled with each child’s name, teacher’s name, and signed by a parent.
Also checkout the ROE Library Blog to see some student’s summer book reviews! Thank you! - Ms. Eastman, ROE Librarian
