Scarborough Handbook

Schedule
Our school day is 7:45-3:15 Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and 7:45-12:45 on Wednesdays.   Students will be admitted to the classrooms at 7:45 a.m. and the tardy bell rings at 7:50 a.m.
Arrival: Breakfast is served from 7:00-7:30 a.m.  Please do not drop off your children earlier than 7:00 a.m. because there is no supervision provided before that time.  Children arriving early will line up on the hardtop or in the halls on cold and rainy days.
Dismissal: At the beginning of each school year, you are asked to fill out a form that states the usual way your child gets home-bus, walk, car.  If this changes, send a note to your child's teacher.  Only bus riders are dismissed from the front of the school.  All others leave from the Bentley or Trenton gates.  Afternoon Pre-K and Kindergarten students will assemble for dismissal with their teacher on the hardtop (or dismiss from their classroom on rainy days).  For safety reasons, do not park across the street on Bentley or Trenton, and summon your child to your car.  Children will not be allowed to cross the street without an adult.
All students must be picked up on time.  If you arrive after 3:25 p.m., you will need to park in the Bentley lot and walk to the front hall to pick up your child.  You must show your driver's license and sign your child out on the appropriate form.  Any person picking up a child must be listed on the enrollment card.

Scarborough has adopted a policy of standardized dress (uniform).  For more information, please click here.

Absences
Every effort should be made to have your children at school every day.  Children cannot learn if they are not present.  Poor attendance can affect a child's promotion to the next grade.
Absences are documented and verified for the following reasons will be classified as excused:  personal illness, illness or death in the family, weather or road conditions making travel dangerous, any other unusual causes acceptable to the principal.  Absences for reasons other than those listed will be considered unexcused.  A doctor's excuse is required for extended absences.  Please keep our school informed.
Reporting Absences: When a student is absent, a parent should call the school office as soon as possible on the day of the absence to report the reason.  On returning to school, a note is required from the parent explaining the reason for the absence.  The note should contain:

Full name of student
Dates absent
Specific reasons for absence each day
Parent's signature and phone number

If a written excuse is not received within 2 days of an absence, the absence will be considered unexcused.

Security
Our student's security while at school is of the greatest importance.  We lock all of the gates at 8:00 a.m. every morning, and they will remain locked until dismissal.  The front door is also locked during the day.  If you are coming to visit, please park in the Bentley lot.  Please do not park in front of the school building during the day.

Grading/Report Cards
Report cards are issued four times a year.  Report cards for grades 1-5 include numerical grades, a general conduct grade, work habits, and absences.  Grades of E, S, N, U are earned for ancillary classes, handwriting, and Health and Safety.  Conduct grades are reported as E, S, N, P.  Kindergarten report cards are also distributed each nine weeks.  Students are evaluated with S, N, I.  The prekindergarten checklist is sent home three times during the year.
Progress Reports are sent home four times a year or, if necessary, when a child is having difficulty in certain areas.
Report cards and progress reports should always be discussed with your child.  If you wish to discuss your child's progress with the teacher, please contact the teacher so that an appointment can be scheduled.

Please see the H.I.S.D. Promotion Standards for information about grade requirements.  A link is provided at the top of this page.

Discipline
Scarborough's discipline expectations follow the HISD Code of Conduct.  You can link to the Code of Conduct by clicking on the link at the top of this page.
A discipline plan is put into action so that a safe learning environment can be created for all students.  Students are expected to follow the guidelines on a daily basis.  Parents will be contacted by the teacher, the school counselor, and/or the Assistant Principal when student misbehavior interferes with teaching and learning.  Conferences will be set up when necessary to correct the problem.

Spark Park
Our Spark Park is open to the community in the evenings and on the weekends.  It is the job of everyone to keep it clean.  We ask that our Bentley and Trenton neighbors be especially watchful and report any vandalism to the HISD police (713-892-7777) and to the school office.
