Shearn's Makeover

On September 14, 2005, local businesses and community members converged on Shearn to give the school a "makeover".

A huge contingent of volunteers worked tirelessly on this day so that the school would appear squeaky-clean and next-to-new, with weed-free flower beds, freshly painted walls and curbs, and power-washed windows throughout the entire building. In addition they provided a baseball diamond and refinished the flattop area where Shearn's students get their Physical Education. In recognition of Shearn's teachers, the entire staff received a "makeover".

The volunteers who performed these tasks came from companies and organizations like Home Depot, Fund for Teachers, Jones New York, Volunteer Houston, Transocean, UBS Security, LLC, Apache Group, SchlumbergerNational Oilwell, AIDS Foundation Houston, Cohen's Landscaping and Nursery, Lollytogs, Ltd./French Toast, Redd Rhino Landscaping and Athletic Field Specialists as part of the Corporate Month of Service program started by the Hands On Network. Its goal is to increase the number of employees who volunteer by 10 percent each year and encourage them to collectively contribute more than half-a-million hours nationwide during a month-long period.

While the student's rooms were being made over, they were redirected to other areas of the school where they worked on projects or helped the volunteers. Shearn's library was also received  more than $5,000.00 of much needed library books.

A special thanks from the Principal, Mr. Buck
