- Du Bois was born Febuary 23, 1868 in Great Barrington,
Massachusets. Du Bois’s parents
names were Alfred and Mary
Silvania Burghardt Du Bois. As a
child, he had no experience of color discrimination or segregation. Du Bois’s family was very poor.

- Du Bois was the first African American to receive a P.H.D. One of Du Bois’s talents was public
speaking. He was selected to
make a presentation to the American Historical Association.

- Du Bois got a job at Wilberforce University. He fell in love with a student named
Nina Gomer.

- In 1914,Du Bois published an editorial supporting women’s right to
vote. Then in 1917 he became
seriously ill. He suffered from kidney problems, and
died on August 27,1963.
