Bilingual Program
The Bilingual Education Program is offered at Stevens Elementary for students whose primary language is Spanish and who need English language skills. The program provides limited English proficient students with a carefully structured sequence of basic skills in their primary language, as well as gradual skill development in English through English as a Second Language methodology.
In bilingual programs, the function of the primary language is to provide sequenced access to the curriculum until the student is fully functional in English. Instruction in the primary language assures that students attain cognitive skills while learning English. A major component of bilingual programs is the development of each student's self-confidence and positive identity with his cultural heritage.
