Enrichment Opportunities/
Ancillary

In addition to the core academic classes, students at Stevens Elementary participate in several other multidisciplinary activities that promote their overall learning experience. These activities offer students the opportunity to interact with children from different classes while integrating fine arts, technology and physical activity with core curriculum skills.
Art
Boys and girls at Stevens get to explore the world of art in a variety of ways that help encourage self-discovery and self-expression. Our art education offers opportunities for children to create visible evidence of cooperative learning in their art projects. Students learn about different cultures and see that various kinds of art do not have to be "pretty" to be valued.
Art education promotes teamwork, communication skills, creative solutions and character development. Students learn about perseverance and patience in art classes, which also offer opportunities for boys and girls to take on personal and classroom responsibilities.
The seeds of creativity are planted at Stevens as students explore the elements of art such as color, lines, and patterns. Some of the projects students work on through the year include monochromatic renditions of names, collages and Rodeo Art for the Houston Rodeo.
Computer Laboratory
The computer laboratory holds twenty computers that are available for students, classes and even parents to use. Teachers can bring classes when working on lessons that require the use of computers so that students can use technology while learning the core curriculum.
Library
Stevens Elementary's library hosts 6 computers for library use, a large television for large group instruction, and various reference books among the over 6000 books. Students can check out books from the library during class visits, before class, and by appointment.
In addition to class use of the library, the ancillary rotation offers a Library Skills course. In this class students learn the basics of using a library including the parts of a book, searching for books on the computer and finding them in a library as well as how to evaluate resources.
Physical Education
Physical Education is education which contributes to the total growth and development of the child primarily through selected movement experiences and physical activity. Our primary concern is with the physical development and well-being of the students.
Stevens supports the American Heart Association's fight against heart disease by participating in the "Jump Rope for Heart" event where our students raise donations and have fun participating in a jump-a-thon.
Daily participation in vigorous physical activity is important. Being prepared for this activity is a must. Students should wear tennis shoes and uniforms that allow them to move about easily and comfortably. It is our sincere wish that the physical education program be beneficial and pleasurable for all boys and girls.
Additionally, we at Stevens, have just started a new soccer club, The Stallions, headed by Mr. Contreras. The Stallions practice Tuesdays and Thursday after school.
Science Laboratories
We have two!
At Stevens, we have a Pre-k to 4th grade Science lab and a 2nd- 5th grade Science Lab. During Science classes, students learn about nature and the world around them. Students from Pre-Kindergarten to fifth grade go to Science class for fifty-five minutes at least once a week.
Discovery is achieved through hands-on lessons. The students are introduced to the scientific method as they explore physical science, earth science and biology in age-appropriate depth. Safety is emphasized in every experiment. Active participation is encouraged as the students learn about inquiry, testing and drawing conclusions.
MAD SCIENCE
In addition to the Science Lab, we also facilitate MAD SCIENCE for every fifth grade student FREE OF CHARGE! During an exciting 10 week program, MAD SCIENCE, explodes the lab, (ok, not literally) and explores science in fun ways which helps prepare our 5th grade Stallions for the Science TAKS.
