Gifted and Talented
The Gifted and Talented Program is under the direction of the Advanced Academic Department of HISD. According to the Texas Education Code Chapter 29 and HISD Board Policy:
Gifted and Talented students are those identified by professionally qualified persons, who perform at, or show the potential for performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment. These are students who require differentiated educational programs and/or services beyond those normally provided by the regular school program in order to realize their contribution to self and society.
Students capable of high performance include those with demonstrated achievement and/or potential ability in any of the following areas:
- Exhibits high performance capability in an intellectual, creative, or artistic area
- Possesses an unusual capacity for leadership
- Excels in a specific academic field
Our teachers at Lulu M. Steven Elementary motivate all students to excel in all academic areas. We serve Gifted and Talented students with a differentiated curriculum that offers depth, complexity and pacing to meet their individual needs.
Parents who would like their children to participate in the GT Program must complete an application. Ms. Villareal, GT coordinator, will be very happy to help answer any questions you might have.
GT evaluation criteria includes:
- Grades
- Parents and Teacher Recommendation
- Ability and Achievement Testing: Nagliery Nonverbal Ability Test, Stanford/Aprenda.
