School Overview/SIP Information
Stevenson Elementary School, named for Robert Louis Stevenson, and
constructed in 1914, is a neighborhood school serving the Cottage Grove
community in the north central area of Houston. The school, located near
the corner of I-10 and T. C. Jester Boulevard, serves approximately 420
students.
The population of the student body is: 96.2% Hispanic, 3.1% Caucasian, and
0.7% African-American, English Language Learners 62%, Special Education
6.2%. Stevenson is a 100% Title I school with 80% of students qualifying
for free and reduced cost meals and 50.9% At Risk.
Programs offered at Stevenson Elementary include the following:
School-wide Title I, Pre-Kindergarten, Traditional Bilingual, ESL, Special
Education Resource, Speech Therapy, and Neighborhood Gifted and Talented
Program (GT). Stevenson Elementary is dedicated to increasing parental and
community involvement. Specifically, this includes (a) parent literacy and
training classes, and (b) engaging the community to identify and integrate
resources and services from the community to strengthen school programs,
Bilingual, special services, family practices, and student learning and
development.
To prepare the Pre-Kindergarten students for transition in to the
elementary school setting, a Kindergarten round up is held every spring.
Stevenson Elementary also provides an orientation the week before school
begins to review district and school policies and procedures as well as to
meet the teacher and visit the classroom.
