SIP Executive Summary

Sugar Grove Elementary, a relief school, is located at 8405 Bonhomme in the Southwest section of the Houston Independent School District. Originally a church facility, the building has been renovated and expanded and a state-of-the-art library, an administrative office complex, and a community/parenting room were created in the last phase from the original church facility. The Sugar Grove Elementary community encompasses 35 square miles due to the large number of schools it relieves. For nine years Sugar Grove has relieved up to 25 campuses in the Southwest and West Districts.

Approximately 416 students will be enrolled at Sugar Grove for the 2007-2008 school year. The school consists of a PK-5th grade campus. This year is the first for three full day PK classes.  Sugar Grove qualifies as a Title I campus because 98% of the student population receives free and reduced lunch.  Sugar Grove implements the Developmental Model for its English Language Learners.  Bilingual/ESL, Gifted and Talented and Special Education services, such as Content Mastery, resource classes, and a Behavior Service Center (B.S.C.), are provided to eligible students. All students are offered bus transportation to and from the school.

Currently Sugar Grove’s student population is comprised of 69% Hispanic and 30% African American. The student Caucasian. Native Americans and Asian/Pacific Islander populations are represented by 1% of the student population. The average attendance rate is 91.4%.

The average experience of Sugar Grove's 33 teachers is 17 years.  The staff consists of 23 classroom teachers, 1 special education resource teacher, 1 content mastery teacher, 2 B.S.C. teachers, 1 computer lab teacher, 1instructional coordinator, 1 librarian, 1 nurse and 1 V.I. teacher.
