Our Special Education program includes individualized educational plans and inclusion in the regular classrooms. Students are served in a small classroom setting to meet individual needs with continued support in the regular classroom . The Neighborhood G/T programs serve qualified students (Grades K-12) enrolled in their schools. At the Elementary level, the Neighborhood G/T program begins in the Spring of the Kindergarten year - 5th grade.
The official definition of the term "giftedness" from the Texas Education Code:
"Gifted and talented student" means a child who performs at or shows the potential for performing at a remarkably high level of accomplishment when compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment and who:
exhibits high performance capability in an intellectual, creative, or artistic area;
possesses an unusual capacity for leadership or
excels in a specific academic field.
The Neighborhood G/T K-5 program focus is to serve the top achieving students on each campus with a differentiated curriculum by modifying the general academic program in depth, complexity, and pacing
Parents who want their child to be considered for the Neighborhood G/T K-5 program must complete an application available through the school coordinator, Ms. Kenley.
The coordinator will compile necessary documentation and assuring that the students take the appropriate tests to complete the identification and assessment process.
All applicants are evaluated on multiple criteria, including: Ability & Achievement Testing, Parent & Teacher Rating, and Grades. A student qualifies or does not qualify based on the completion of the district approved Profile sheet.
Bilingual classes are offered to students in first through fifth grades . Spanish and English are taught through out the day. English as a Second Language is offered to students on each grade level. Students receive instruction in English with emphasis on vocabulary development and comprehension.
Alphabetic Phonics is a program designed to help students see, touch, hear, and move with the sounds of our language. Our primary teachers are trained in this program so that they can enhance our reading program.
The Reading First Local Campus Coach (LCC) is a certified teacher who has expertise in K-3 reading and the core reading program. The LCC works closely with K-3 teachers to mentor and assist them in the full implementation of the core reading program. The LCC is knowledgeable about the five essential components of reading, appropriate use of assessment, intervention strategies for struggling readers, and serves as a resource for K-3 teachers.
