Ms. Alvarado

I have worked for the Houston Independent School District for twenty-one years in a wide-range of positions. My belief is that all children are capable learners and I strive to assist them to reach their full potential.

I have worked for Houston Independent School District for seventeen years.  I have learned throughout the years that knowledge is not power, it is only potential power that becomes real through using it.

Ms. Roberson

Welcome to Mrs. Roberson’s Class

Dear Parents,

My name is Ms. Roberson, and I will be your child’s 1st grade teacher.    During first grade your child will learn how to read, write stories, spelling, add, subtract, and so much more.  Your child will be learning many math concepts and problem solving skills that can be applied to their every day life.  In our science and social studies, we will learn about the world in which we live in.

I was born and raised in Houston, Texas.  I have taught Pre-K for 14 years.  This will be my 3rd year teaching 1st grade.  My room is inviting for the students and I also have wonderful learning stations set up in my room.  I have a lot of love for children and encourage each one to do their best.  I also encourage parents to come in and look at our classroom and your child’s work that is displayed through out the year.

Parents are the most important people in a child’s life, and we need to work together for the benefit of your child.  I need you to support my academic, homework, and discipline efforts here at school.  In return, I will keep you informed about all the aspects of your child’s experiences at school.  With school and home work together, I know that each and every student can have his/her most successful school year.  Please feel free to contact me whenever necessary.

Quick Reminders:

*Make sure your child has supplies
*Read over parent handbook
*Always check in at the office when you visit
*Dress code is enforced
*Review code of student conduct
 *Check students folder

*Do not pick up your child early unless for medical reasons or emergency

*My conference times are: Monday-Friday 1:05-1:50.  Please note that the children’s safety comes first after school and I’m not able to hold a discussion at this time.

Joyce Pierce

I am currently a first grade teacher.  I have taught 32 years with the Houston Independent School District; 19 years in special education, 2 years in second grade, and 11 years in first grade. Teaching is more than a profession.  It's a lifestyle - a part of my existence. First grade has been an enjoyable experience for me.  This grade is the foundation for success in the later grades, a  time to strengthen their knowledge and enhance their skills.  I hope this year will be fun and exciting and that they will develop a love for learning.  One of my favorite quotes is, "What nobler profession than to touch the next generation - to see children hold your understanding in their eyes, your hope in their lives, your world in their hands.  In their success you find your own and so to them you give your all."

First Grade News

School starts promptly at 7:30 and are marked TARDY if the students are NOT at their desks.

Welcome

The children look wonderful in their school learning clothes, and most of them have brought all requested supplies.  Further notices of needed items will go home individually.

First grade is an exciting year of changes and learning.  The children begin to take more responsibility for their learning, improve reading, language and math skills, and discover new ideas in science and social studies.  Homework is a big priority for these children.  They should spend 20 minutes daily on reading assignments and 10 minutes on math.  The decodable books that come home have a homework sheet with them.  Please make a special place at home to keep the books; the homework should be completed and returned daily.  Extra reading time can be spent making up rhymes, building words with letter cards, or other reading activities.  See your child's teacher for additional ideas.  Extra math time should be spent on finding patterns, math facts, counting coins, and telling time.  Working in the kitchen with different measuring items will improve your child's skills and make some fun time for you as a family.

Volunteers Needed

Please note that you must complete the volunteer background process before you can accompany children on a field trip.  This is a two-week period, so please do that as soon as possible.  Check in the front office for details.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact your child's teacher.  We are here to make your child successful in first grade and lay a foundation for future learning.

  • Tuesday Folders are sent weekly to update parents/guardians of their child's progress.  If you wish to set up a conference, please call the school (713) 773-6151.

  • Please make every attempt to read with your child for 30 minutes a day!

  • All homework must be completed and turned in on-time to maximize class participation.

  • Students must respect all adults, fellow students, and self at ALL TIMES.

  • After school tutorials have begun.  Please make every effort to have your child attend.
