Your Ticket to Discovery

More than a thousand students and their family members poured into the cafetorium at West U. Elementary to participate in the school’s recent Science Night steered by event chairs Terri Koehler and Stephanie Watowich and curriculum enrichment chair Michelle Bunch. Themed “Your Ticket to Discovery,” West U. Elementary’s cafetorium was transformed into seven interactive stations, including a planetarium and a coral reef, that promoted the wonders of science. As a math, science and technology magnet school in Houston Independent School District, West U. Elementary’s Science Night integrated multiple scientific disciplines into the event. Rice University astrophysicist David Alexander guided students in a planetarium. At the nearby Up in the Air station, West U. icon John “Astronaut Dan” Olivas — parent of three West U. Elementary students and who gave the fifth-grade students’ Flat Stanley a lift to the International Space Station last June — joined pilot parent Steve Smith in demonstrating how planes lift and shuttles rise. There, students tried on the gear that modern explorers use to reach the stars and constructed Leonardo model planes with community volunteer Inda Immega. Venturing from the sky to the sea, students then adorned masks and took virtual dives off the Texas Gulf Coast to discover the hidden treasures of the Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary coral reef at Undersea Adventures, led by parent Tania Grekin and parent/marine biologist Ann Cheek. Relative to the earth, students learned that science rocks.
