Central Region Leaders Schedule More Community Meetings
HISD has developed ASPIRE (which stands for Accelerating Student Progress Increasing Results and Expectations) as a framework for consolidating academic improvement efforts throughout the organization. There are four core components of the ASPIRE model: developing human capital; improving teaching and learning; informing practice; and recognizing excellence. EVAAS (Educational Value Added Assessment System) is the cornerstone of the informing practice component and is also used to measure and communicate our district’s focus on student achievement. HISD Central Region is conducting several meetings to ensure that all community members have an opportunity to learn more about value-added analysis and how it fits with HISD's ASPIRE framework.  Click here for more information about meeting dates and times.

Promotion Standards at HISD The Houston Independent School District uses three different academic measures to decide whether a student will be promoted to the next grade level. They are course grades, a local or state test (High-Frequency Word Test or Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS)), and a nationally norm-referenced test (Stanford or Aprenda). Please note that attendance may also affect promotion to the next grade level, since students may have no more than seven percent unexcused absences during the school year. For more specific information at each grade level, click here.

We have received confirmation from Adriana Tamez, Central Region Superintendent, that the the Wharton Dual Language Program will remain at its present location for the 2008-2009 school year. Please note that a long term plan is still pending. Community meetings for the purpose obtaining input for a long term plan for the Wharton Dual Language Program are forthcoming.

Wharton Elementary Is Now an ISA! Wharton Elementary was recently named an International Spanish Academy (ISA) from Spain's Ministerio de Educacion y Ciencia. ISAs are part of an international cooperative educational project in English and Spanish between public schools in the U.S. and Canada and the Ministry of Education and Culture of Spain.

Wharton Elementary Earns Prestigious TBEC Honor Roll! Sixteen HISD schools have been named to the prestigious Texas Business and Education Coalition (TBEC) Honor Roll for 2007, officials announced. Less than five percent of the more than 8,000 public schools in Texas earn the honor, and HISD claimed 16 of the top spots. The TBEC Honor Roll recognizes schools that have demonstrated three years of consistent, high performance in all subjects compared to other schools serving similar student populations. The TBEC Honor Roll schools have the highest percentage of students performing at the state's most rigorous standard, "commended" performance, in every subject. What is Dual Language?

The Wharton Elementary Dual Language philosophy promotes both Spanish and English as languages of equal value. We feel that by placing importance on both languages we are not only preparing our students for the multi-lingual, multicultural world we are living in, but they are also learning the importance and value in respecting other cultures in our increasingly global society.

Wharton is participating in the FundingFactory® Recycling Program!
This fundraiser is FREE and simple because there’s nothing to sell, no paperwork to fill out and no deadline. The program runs year-round, accumulating constant income for our efforts. But we won’t get very far without your support. Please donate your empty printer cartridges and used cell phones to our school and we’ll take it from there! We will recycle the cartridges and cell phones through FundingFactory to earn new technology equipment or cash for the school.

FundingFactory also sponsors a businesses support program, where your employer can help out our school without spending a cent. Prepaid shipping boxes can be sent, free of charge, directly to any business, organization or other facility within the continental United States. Business supporters simply need to load the boxes and leave them for the next UPS pickup. If you work for a company that may be interested in supporting us, please call FundingFactory toll-free at 1.888.883.8237. Give the customer service representative our school identification number, 123750 and they’ll set you up to support our account.

Drop-Off Location: Wharton Computer Lab (Room T-29)

If you have any questions about this great opportunity, please call 713-535-3771 or e-mail jcolema3@houstonisd.org. Thank you for your support!
